Is Gsync Worth It?

This guy (OP) has a pair of 1070's

I understood it as planning to buy, not already have. Of course if OP already owns one 1070 or two then I would personally get the non-gsync 100Hz 3440x1440.

Since OP plays FPS games, a super high refresh monitor will do more than Gsync, so either a 100Hz ultrawide (run it at 16:9 in windowed mode or letterboxed, if the game doesn't like it, and in games that work, it wil be awesome).

Or a 144Hz 1440p would also be a fine choice. Not choosing Gsync allows the choice of an IPS panel without paying $700 for it.

But why?  SLI has so many problems.  Save your money and buy a 1080ti in March.

I already have 1x 1070

But I also play AAA games

If your budget allows for a 1070 or two, then I would definitely try to fit a gsync monitor in there. There are some that go for $350-400 but are only 1080p.

Of course if you're not planning to buy soon, you could wait for vega, and get a freesync which is the same functionality but the monitors cost a lot less.

My options are

1x 1070 with a gsync monitor (2560 x 1440 or 2560 x 1080)

or

2x 1070's with a non gsync monitor (2560x 1440 or 2560 x 1080 or 3440 x 1440)

Hmm. I would take single 1070 and Gsync then, just cuz the 2 1070s won't work in every game. GTA V for instance doesn't like multi GPU

Can't I use fast sync as well?

Fast Sync is just vsync though. A bit less input lag but still stutters when framerates go down. Gsync will make the SLI stutters go away.

This one imo. If you need another monitor later you can buy a $250 1440p one and use it for non gamey stuff

Wait, but if the monitors are 144hz, will I notice a difference?

I haven't had my hands on SLI + Gsync so I couldn't tell you exactly, but at least one LTT user attested to having SLI stutter (980 Tis I think) and a Gsync monitor that did away with said stutters.

Of course if you're pushing frames over 100 the gameplay will be very smooth either way, just that Gsync will make it even smoother. Even if you're on SLI 1070s if you get into a game that's really demanding but doesn't support SLI (like say, GTA V), Gsync will help with smoothness because you will not be pushing 144fps on a single 1070 in GTA V Ultra 2560x1440

Oh in that case, if most of the games you like are not demanding at all, I would buy only one 1070, then spend the rest of the money as you like. For instance 1070 + 3440x1440 Gsync.

Or a huge SSD, a custom cooling loop, etc

if i get the non-gsync monitor and 1x 1070 I can get a better cpu (6900k instead of 5820k)

Meh what would you use it for? Unless your computer is a workstation, even 6 cores is overkill as of today. This changes if you stream a lot, then do get a 5820K.

But I get the desire not to spend $1K+ on a monitor. You could save the money and put it elsewhere honestly. Since you mostly don't play the most demanding games.

G-sync is life.  I switched last month from 1080p/144hz to 1440p/144hz/gsync and it's amazing.  I've never experienced anything so smooth in my life.  It's great being able to crank everything to ultra and still have great smooth gameplay, even at 50fps!   I thought I was just a real snob about high fps, but it's really the tearing that was killing me and I never even knew it.

That being said, I chose to get my 1440p and a cheaper 1440p/75hz for my side display

Would gsync be worth the money for 1440p 144hz? I am saying this because, if I dont get gsync, I can get a 6900k instead of a 5820k. Thoughts?

GSync is well worth the cost IMO. Whether it's worth not getting the 6900K really depends on what the system is used for. The 5820K will do well with most tasks.

Both the 5820k and 6900k are not very good.

Unless you do video editing 12 hours a day because it's your job, get a 6700k/7700k.

Hardwarecanucks and several other benchmarks show the 6700k overclocked performs just as well as the 6800k in most tasks, worse in some rendering, but better in other programs like after effects and stuff, and better in games.

Tearing on 144hz isn't nearly as bad as 60hz. Honestly I would get the Gsync still unless you really need the extra performance of the 6900k. It really to know what is your priority. If you do more gaming then Gsync if you do more 3d tasks then the 6900k.
