Researchers at Stanford University have developed a new battery that contains a fire extinguishing substance which is released should the battery overheat. In tests the substance called Triphenyl Phosphate has been able to extinguish a battery in 0.4 seconds.

Pretty cool stuff, it came a little to late for Samsung's Note series however.

Anybody else see the irony in using phosphorus to extinguish fires?

Not really irony,  salts don't often have the same properties as the original element. You have phosphates in your bones and teeth and they don't catch fire.

Oh yeah, I understand how chemical compounds work. As I said, I find that kinda stuff fascinating. Taking something used for one thing and altering it in a way that makes it useful for the opposite or something entirety different.

Like how they use explosives to do work instead of destroy things or use a disease to cure another disease etc.
