Gimp 2.10 changelog revealed, here's what to expect

The team behind the GIMP project as finally announced what's to come in the future. GIMP 2.10 will be the next stable release of the software, last one was 2.8 released in 2012 with the most recent of the 2.8 line being 2.8.18 released on July. GIMP 2.10 will come this year and brings a tonne of new features that you can check in the changelog over here, here are the most noteworthy if you are too busy to read through it:

1. GIMP will rely entirely on GEGL (Generic Graphics Library) for all operations 

2. It will come with five new themes and 3 new icon themes

3. GIMP 2.10 is also due to ship with 16/32-bit per color channel support in PNG, TIFF, PSD and FITS, new color management implementation, WebP and OpenEXR support, and a lot, lot more.

 

But wait there's more!

At the end of January there will be a developer meet up in Barcelona called Wilber Week, there the team will discus about cleaning up libgimp to get it in a releasable state for 2.10, talk about porting it to GTK3 which will also bring back Wacom support on Linux and Windows, and "other exciting news" as teased by the team.

With most companies going to a subscription based service this is very nice to see. Adobe used to be tolerable at $600 a pop but $49 a month or more, you have to be joking.

Pixelmator is a really nice alternative on the Mac. Way more polished than Gimp... it's 30$ which is cheap when you compare. But it's nice to see a crossplatform alternative keep moving foward.

Software versions don't follow traditional decimal notation. It is "two point ten", not "two point one zero".

2.9.4 is not a valid number, but still makes sense from a software revision point of view.

Sadly GIMP is useless for professional use, most plugins and extras are only for photoshop. Stuff like Quixel/NDO Painter are eons ahead of anything GIMP has. 

People need to realize that working on multiple free or open source photoeditors wont help them, Krita and GIMP should join forces and devlop only 1 program and provide much better tools and quality features instead of 2 teams fixing the same problem and not having time to develop new features.

I'm still using GIMP 2.6.12.  The new versions introduced several bugs, and it's harder to save as a specific file format.

Krita is an open source image editor that can actually compete with photoshop in the same way Blender with Autodesk. Unfortunately not a lot of people knew about it, industry support is low. Krita has so much potential.

I was never abble (read: intelligent) to use GIMP.

I think i'm going to download it now, i need a image manipulation software for my machine, instead of borrowing my friends laptop to do my casual edits.

I wish they'd port it to Qt, it's just better than GTK at this point, but it will probably never happen. I'm glad they revamped the UI a little bit, theming has historically been a mess across the board in GTK.

KDE and GNU are completely separate entities with different end goals. You can't think of the FOSS community as if it were a single group with a common goal. KDE wants Qt to integrate as well as possible with their desktop environment, GNU refuses to use Qt because of its Nokia (hence corporate) origins and its not-100%-FOSS attitude.

 

That's also a good thing because it creates variety, but it inevitably leads to products that can't be used professionally (with some rare exceptions like Blender). For the average user, however, they are both valid alternatives to a very expensive product (Photoshop).
