DDR4 CL14 VS CL15 VS 16??

Go to solution Solved by ARikozuM,

Lower CAS is bettter while higher bandwidth is better. For gaming, getting a higher-speed kit can help when it comes to calculations.

Guys, what is the best:

2400mhz CL14 vs 2400mhz CL 15 vs 2400mhz CL 16

2800mhz CL14 vs 2800mhz CL 15 vs 2800mhz CL 16

3000mhz CL14 vs 3000mhz CL 15 vs 3000mhz CL 16

I will buy 3000mhz CL 15 ram soon, but what's the difference, higher mhz gives more fps in games, we all can see benchmarks proving that, the thing is, will I lose perfomance if I buy Cl 15 and not cl 14 or cl 16?

For CL, lower is better :D

There isn't much difference though, so I would get the cheapest of all......

Faster RAM doesn't mean better performance in games...unless you're using an APU which uses system RAM as VRAM.

Faster RAM and lower CL make a difference in certain workstation application type loads.

Unless you meet either of the two criteria or just want to be a baller I'd go with the cheapest option. It won't make any noticeable difference.

Higher speeds/frequency favors games, while lower CL favors everything in rendering/editing/workloads.

See this:

Main:  1650 v2   @ 4,6GHz   -   X79 Deluxe                -   GTX 1080 @ 2000MHz   -   24GB DDR3 @ 2400MHz / CL10

Side:   i7-4790K @ 4,5GHz   -   Maximus 7 Hero        -   GTX 1070 @ 2114MHz    -  16GB DDR3 @ 2666MHz / CL12

Yes, of course it doesn't mean better performance in games, but you can see benchmarks in digital foundry testing, 2400mhz vs 3000mhz, and 3000mhz gives you 6 to 10 fps more.

Ram speed does matter, it's been discussed many many times and while the gains might be "insignificant"  there is more to performance than just FPS.  Frametimes are improved as well which make a huge difference for smooth performance and immersion.  If you're getting good fps but your frametime is all over the place then it's a mess and hard to look at.  I'm not saying that 2400 cl16 is going to be bad, but 3000 cl14 will be better, no questions asked....  Is it worth the money?  that depends on the price of each kit

Then GTFO :o No! I'm seriously kidding and I don't mean that in any way!  I'm not here to argue either :D I just felt it had to be said for some stupid reason....  I'm sorry

But what I can say is that I noticed a HUGE difference going from (edit: DDR3) 1600 cl11 to 2400 cl11 (I know, we're talking about ddr4 now but still).  It wasn't a massive fps increase but around 5-7fps average (almost 10%) in several games like gtav, fallout4 and metro2033 iirc.  Everything just felt so much better as well, I was really surprised.  I know that is kinda an extreme example, but take it for what you will I guess ^_^

You got me to crack a smile. Even my best friend has a hard time getting me to do that.

My knowledge of the effects RAM speed has on games is back using DDR3. I wonder if DDR4 is wired into the CPU differently. In some fashion where the speed actually makes a noticeable difference in games.

Wrong. That was in VERY especific Situations, and ofc the vídeo shows real diference, usually this is not true. Only in very CPU bound cenarios and it has a LT of variables also. If you have a Titan XP and a 7700k, the only way to improve is getting faster ram, but if you are a mere mortal, why botter.

Edit: some ppl talked about frame times, that May be more relevant, that is true. But we need to see more in depth and serious tests, all tests these Days are kinda biased/incomplete or have mediocre metodology.

Ultra is stupid. ALWAYS.

haha wonderful!

Mine was ddr3 ;) I should've stated that.  I still haven't made the jump to ddr4 yet, though it's coming up really soon.  I need some of that 3000mhz+ in my life

I just bought a 8x8GB kit of DDR4 2400MHz and overclocked it to 2666MHz then toyed with the voltage and timing a bit. Plenty fast enough for anything I do. Quantity over speed is better for my applications.

And let me ask you something ... did you even notice any performance gain when you "overclocked" RAM?

For games and light editors, it won't matter at all.

Having super fast RAM would come in handy only if you are rendering 24/7, and even then performance gains would be minimal.

To the original post: Get cheaper RAM ... they are all fast enough already.

I did not notice any performance gain. I'm just an avid overclocker. Like "Hey, a dial...I wonder how far I can turn it..."

I can relate that xD

And in 95% cases, people are overclocking to share benchmarks scores and because they simply can. Not for some performance increase for daily usage.

  • 5 years later...

What happens if you pair a CL16 Ram with a CL15? I have installed Kingston FURY CL16 ram in single channel (Could only afford one) and now I am planning on buying the second ram but Kingston have discontinued it and I can only find CL15 here. Will it work if paired together?
Thank you in Advance. 🙂

it might work, or you might have problems. Tough to say until you plug it in. It’s best to buy a matching pair.
