5820k with noctua d14 cooler?

msammy93

Hi, is it considered unsafe to overclock the 5820k to 4.0 ghz without a water cooler? I have the noctua nh-d14 se2011 cooler on it atm and want to know if its time to upgrade to a water cooler. Thanks

D14 is a very powerful cooler. It is perfectly fine for that

okay, thanks. you think I can go higher with the d14 or just stick at 4.0 ghz. Only overclocking becuase I recently got into pc gaming and it seems that games require more powerful single cores than just more cores.

If you're at 4 GHz now, run a stress test. see how hot it gets. If you are comfortable going hotter, overclock more. repeat until it gets too hot or is unstable

Main Rig: R9 5950X @ PBO, RTX 3090, 64 GB DDR4 3666, InWin 101, Full Hardline Watercooling

Server: R7 1700X @ 4.0 GHz, GTX 1080 Ti, 32GB DDR4 3000, Cooler Master NR200P, Full Soft Watercooling

LAN Rig: R5 3600X @ PBO, RTX 2070, 32 GB DDR4 3200, Dan Case A4-SFV V4, 120mm AIO for the CPU

HTPC: i7-7700K @ 4.6 GHz, GTX 1050 Ti, 16 GB DDR4 3200, AliExpress K39, IS-47K Cooler

Router: R3 2200G @ stock, 4GB DDR4 2400, what are cases, stock cooler

I don't have a problem...

The D14 is pretty much on par with high end AIO water coolers.

That's technically true but doesn't give much headroom. I personally like it to be cooler but some may be willing to let their CPU get on the hot side.

4ghz isn't much. You should be shooting for at least 4.3ghz with the NH-D14.
