Is the GTX 970 still good today?

Aaronius_Leonius

I am building a pc and was going to go with an RX 480 but I then realized that I could get a used 970. I was wondering if I can run every game at 60fps in 1080p at medium settings or higher. I also am a game developer and was wondering if it would be good for that. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Can it run shadow of mordor and minecraft with shaders? If you don't have those games, that's fine

A RX 480 is competing with a 1060 which is very close to a 980 in performance. So yes it is good but not as good as a 480

I might be able to find a good deal on a 980 when I get my GPU. It would be in august so I assume it would get cheaper.

Dude, get the RX 480 or go for 1060. I'd strongly recommend not to buy used products.

if you don't know the condition of how those video cards were used, I'd stay away

Can you please specify why? I need a good reason if I want to make a decision.

I can't tell yo specific numbers, but RX-480 and GTX 1060 are a little bit better in gaming. And why buy used goods, while you can buy new and better cards in the same price(I suppose).

That's a pretty low temp. Which one do you have?

They do the job as well as nvidia.

It's just that normally, amd cards run at some higher temp than nvidia one.

To be specific:

Sapphire RX480 8GB Nitro+

I'm running with no overclocking at currently 50*c whilst not playing any games, but when playing games at ultra graphics it never achieves higher than 65*c, which I still wouldn't consider "hot".

The 970 is more in my price range. I can get one for $180 on ebay. If t is almost on par with them, I will likely get a 970.

if the workload isn't too demanding and you are locking it, yes

Are you on an overclock? I would probably overclock my card because I want the best value for my money.

what if the workload is very intense? the GPU temp will go ~80deg

I am on the OC-product, but I don't want to do it manually because I am not a hard-ware nerd (personally) and don't want to damage my computer. Plus, I'm happy with my statistics anyway.

I never said I am locking it at 60FPS, ever, I said it can achieve 60fps.
