Do you have to use a dvi cable for every 144 hz monitor or can you use hdmi?

Depends on the monitor. Some (like the ViewSonic XG2401) will take 144 Hz over HDMI, but others like the ASUS VG248QE or the BenQ XL2411Z will only take 60 Hz over HDMI.

 

I would recommend getting 144 Hz monitors with DisplayPort if you are in the market, don't get the XL2411Z or the Acer GN246HL since their lack of DisplayPort is quite limiting.
