AMD Zen server platform detailed

AMD's Zen server side of things, called Naples has been detailed. AMD has planned to launch 2 of them, in 1U or 2U configurations. The 1U system supports up to 32 NVMe drive, 4 gpus, and has dual Infiniband EDR interconnect to communicate between the storage and server. The 2U one, supports  6 discrete graphic cards, up to 26 NVMe drives, and has a single Infiniband EDR interconnect. AMD Naples will have up to 128 PCIe gen 3 lanes and 8 channel DDR4 memory architecture. The cpu itself will have up to 32 cores and 64 threads with a tdp of 35-180w.

32 cores, that's better than anything Intel has to offer. Intel has a 24 core Xeon E7 8890 v4 for 7000$+.

Isn't the Phi a co processor or something? Does it perform the same as a normal CPU?

the new ones are full cpu's and can run any x86_64 code, they just also have a ton of new avx instructions for compute.

Xeon Phi is 72 core.

I wonder if there will be any enthusiast hardware that borrows from this...

I'm not too sure about Zen desktop stuff since we got some information on the platform, looks like it has only marginally more connectivity than Z97/Z170.

If you are ever looking into getting one, the older ones are actually relatively cheap on eBay.

128 lanes. One hundred and twenty eight lanes. Both Xeon Phi 7290 and E7 8890V4 have 36 and 32, respectively. What the actual hell is this magic?

People are always defending Intel and saying: "Yeah, Intel mainly focuses on servers and stuff". Yeah, I can see that.

Eh, not reading anything that is "wow" enough to cause datacenters to have any interest in switching from Intel.  

 

4S Xeon E7 also provides 128 PCIe lanes.
