Intel now offering hyperthreaded Pentium CPUs!

I have two g3258s, they're toys at best. I still recommend the 860k over them for average joes on a budget because normal people don't care there's an .ini hack to play far cry 4 with 2 cores they just want it to work.

How many other games have that problem?

Imo it doesn't matter.  Current AAA games are locking people out of playing them for having a straight dual core.  This means johnny casual who likes PC gaming but isn't into hardware at all doesn't get to play it.  Until that changes I cannot recommend a straight dual core.

And  before that the Sandy bridge stuff was just too expensive.

These things don't appear to perform on par with i3s, though. I can't figure out why. So far, very few benchmarks have been released. Hopefully, Digital Foundry will have a few soon.

They don't have the AVX Instruction set and have less cache, to name a few reasons

I can see these being used in QNAP and Synology NAS units thought, sort of. Some of the QNAP models already use G3200 & G4400 series CPUs but those are few and the higher spec ones use i3, lower models more typically use Atoms/Celeron N etc.

AKA, might as well use a 3GHz Core 2 uad or LGA771 Xeon over them then, since they have the same lack of AVX, though some have more L2 cache than my 4790K has total cache.

If your going to do that you might as well buy 1366 CPUs, either i7 9xx or Xeon E/X 5500/5600. Those range from $6 to $100 on ebay and have up to 6c/12t, for example a X5680 (6c/12 3.33Ghz/3.6Ghz) is $98 USD and would totally crush everything in this price range.

Well they're still on 65nm or higher ;)

Sandy Bridge CPUs have been really cheap these days. That's the budget king now

I wouldn't need to buy one-I've already got a X5450+decent motherboard (though it only works properly with RAM on the VL for 1066MHz and higher).

I've got 65nm+45nm, covered as well with my X6850 (and 90nm with my Pentium 4 540J)

Yea was just meaning in general, if your going to recommend using something old might as well use the best old possible which are at the same price point :). This entire Pentium G lineup is pointless when these exist, and if someone is worried about power draw then use the L series Xeons.

Or E  series (their TDP is a lot lower than X series Xeons. And as it stands, my Xeon at stock beats Sandybridge i3 multi threaded, and matches an i5 4440 at around 4.4-4.6GHz.

The main difference is that Intel disabled AVX, which makes no difference in games

well .. actually, from what I found GTA5 uses both AVX and FMA3 sets

this is why the KabyLake Pentium is pegget almost all the time to 100% usage

the i3s are expensive for a reason

A price difference as large as what we are seeing?

That's what you get with no competition. Dual core i3s for over $200.

Ryzen should (and will) change that.

Yeah, @Morgan MLGman and I were just talking about those. I still can't figure out why they're so much slower than the Core i3 6100. 200MHz is a negligible improvement in clock speed, as well as Kabylake's architectural improvements being negligible. Furthermore, they chips have the same amount of cache. Basically, they're the same chip 200MHz apart. Why is the Pentium hitting 100% all over the place?

I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't actually using the "full" fledged version of Kabylake :P

for AVX and FMA3? if AMD doesn't do a better job this is what we get

Both. AVX which has been in CPU since Sandybridge, and FMA3 which was in Haswell i3. Also, AVX and FMA3/FMA4 have been available in Bulldozer (even the single module APU)-which is nearing its 5th year.

When will people learn that hyperthreading is only a way to utilize the coes you have a bit better (about 20% in best case szenario)? A dualcore with HT is worse than a 3 core without HT.

Only advantage I can see:

- get around the "low threadcount lock", but a proper coded application (games tend to be broken all over the place) should not have such a requirement but scale smoothly from 1 to 256 cores (it may have negative speed up but should just run)

- just show off you thread count in task manager (or don't be ashamed of showing two)
