There isn't a mobile variant of the RX470. This may be a custom design to fit in in a laptop but that is no different from any other AIB custom design that goes in to a desktop. Just like 1060 used in laptops....

Nice good to see more AMD GPUs making it in to higher tier laptops, kind of surprised this happened before Vega. I thought it would happen more quickly but when it didn't I gave up expecting it to happen with Polaris GPUs.

Except it's not. There is no mobile RX470. This has the same 2048 SPs at the same clocks as the desktop version with 8GB of VRAM, they just bin them beforehand (like dekstop cards that are made for overclocking are binned for higher quality chips). Now that yields have improved with better quality wafers power consumption has gone down on both the RX480 and RX470. That's why Dell announced the laptops months ago but only now are they shipping them.

if things are as you described, then where the hell is the RX 480s in laptops?

The previous gen Tonga Chip (R9 M 295X and R9 M395X) made it into the Alienware 15 a few years ago. But many people hated on it and said it sucked......

 

Hopefully the Nvidia schills can stop being schills and think about buying something with an AMD product in it. Literally saw a new Alienware 15 (the GTX 1070 model)  in person yesterday from a guy who owns one......

He described it as having an "Nvidia 1070 GTX" and sounds like he has no idea wtf he's buying.......

That pretty much is the sad truth about most computer tech buyers and the Nvidia brand appeal. There is about as much stigma between AMD and Nvidia as there is between jap cars and euro cars. Actually no more, a lot more.

 

Makes it rather hard for laptop makers to do high end laptops using AMD GPUs since people won't buy them simply based on that and the belief it is not high end enough without even looking in to it.

Because an overclocked RX470 draws no more than 120W, max. If people overclock their RX480 in a notebook you'd suddenly have a power draw of over 150W. That's a lot of heat to dissipate in a notebook.

This is on a different price bracket than the 1050 and 1050 ti laptops. Yes this is 35% faster but also about 45% more expensive or more: The inspiron can be had with a 1050ti for 900 USD if you downgrade to a 1050 (not worth it imho but the option is there) it's 800.

 

So if you have 1400ish for a laptop this looks like the ticket for you, but if you have less than that putting the 460 on a laptop would just not yield comparable results.

 

It looks like for once, Nvidia is actually the one undercutting AMD here by a substantial amount when it comes to this SKUs. Now will the fucking pricks transfer those obvious 1050ti price cuts to the desktop SKUs? Doubt it but they should.

Because it did. When it was released, iirc 880M was the top dog, and M295X was slower than 780M, and 980M smoked it back to last year. The situation didn't improve with M395X.
