Stacking Fans

I am building a medium power computer for a friend to to photoshop/graphic design work.

Quick spec list:

  • Intel i5 6500 3.2 GHz
  • Gigabyte GA-H110M-A Motherboard
  • Avexir Core Series 16GB DDR4
  • EVGA 500W Powers supply
  • Crucial MX300 275GB SSD
  • 2TB Segate HDD
  • GTX 660ti
  • Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO Cooler with 120mm Fan
  • Cooler Master N200 Case with 2 fans

I have worked on plenty of computers before, but this if my first build from scratch. I got everything together fairly easily, but when I got the CPU cooler mounted I ran into a problem. 1st the way I put the cooler fan on it was blocking the RAM slots so I moved it to the other side of the cooler. Now I have a fan pulling air through the cooler, exhausting into another fan which is exhausting air from the case(at least I think it is, the fan's not marked and it was pre-installed in the case at the back so I would assume that it's exhaust). See the picture attached.

Is this the best solution? I don't know if putting the fan to pull through the cooler is the best option, but I can't put it on the right side of the cooler because of the RAM slot, and it seems to me like 2 fans next to each other would cause a negative pressure inside the case since I only have 1 fan pulling air in. I almost want to pull the fan off the back of the case, put it on the front of the case above the other one as an intake and use the fan on the cooler as the primary exhaust.

What is the best option here?

The fan on the heatsink, and the fan on the case will interfere with each other with regards to airflow. What you can try doing is orienting the cooler sideways(so the cooler fan is on the bottom in reference to the supplied photograph), and then moving or mounting a fan to the top of the case.

What I would do:

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

Hypnotoad's RAM is dying, his motherboard is acting like the 6-year-old AsRock it is, a couple of SATA ports have just stopped working, but the RGB remains. The RGB always remains. Hypnotoad lives. All glory to the Hypnotoad.

i have a similar issue. what i did was take a broken fan, cut out the motor and blades, then cable tie it to the case fan and i saw a few degrees drop in temp at load.

it also looks like you can fit a slim fan on front of cpu. i think scythe makes slim fans

Slim fans, in my experience anyway, tend to be louder and not move as much air. For airflow fans in an ITX build, they work well. For a heatsink or radiator fan, they're not well optimized.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

Do a simple test. Run some heavy benchmark for 30mins and check max temps on CPU. First with current setup and then remove rear exhaust. If temps are better without rear exhaust, then you might as well leave it like that. Or do as Godly suggested. Unlike common superstition here, GPUs don't radiate so much heat upwards that it would cause issues with CPU cooling.

Pull works just fine. Unless you're oc'ing with the 6500, even running the heatsink without an attached fan is perfectly fine.
