XFX Radeon RX 480 RS Triple X 8GB - Why so much cheaper?

Petoovee

How come the XFX Radeon RX 480 RS Triple X 8GB is 40$ cheaper than all the other 480 8 gigs? I've been reluctant to buy it for over a month fearing it will disintegrate as soon as it starts up.

More specifically, I'm talking 2500 Swedish Krones versus the next cheapest 480 8gig model from either Gigabyte or Sapphire for ~2760 kr. Like, there's a clear line where no other manufacturer has went below, and then XFX came with a second variant, already having one type of 480 8gig out, undercutting the rest.

Anyone knows if this happens to be scrapyard material no one should buy?

Excuse my broken keyboard

Nothing's wrong with it. Just XFX probably trying to price it better.

 Overall, it's pretty average.

With a dual fan setup and all the usual marketing gimmicks I fail to see what the more expensive cards have got to offer. I imagined the components of the other cards were average and the XFX one was below.

Don't always assume that higher price = better.

try buying a 1GB USB stick VS a 16GB one.

They used to have Double Life Time warranty back like in the old days. That means when you buy one with that, you get life time warranty and when you sell it to your friend, he gets life time warranty on the card too.  Not sure about now. Maybe just the standard warranty found on most cards. 2 to 3 years?

it has a lesser vrm than the ref card same as the power color devil 13 card. 4 power phases instead of 5. the cooler is ok and the vrm is still fine. still better than the gigabyte.

This is true. The other PCB version of this card has the FURY PCB. It's nuts for OCing.

The RS is just your average 480, the GTR is binned therefore more expensive. XFX's lowest tier card is usually cheaper than the other AIB partner's cards.

This ^  I'd assume the power is divided between the phases so 5 are better than 4 for less heat and longer longevity? Also OC? Do you happen to know where I can read up on this?

Before this STRIX I always went for XFX, I find them reputable and the like, so it's not the brand in itself, but the very competitive pricing.

Yeah it is.  It is fine for oc on the stock bios. It's more to do with the rating of the phases rather than the number. If you look up actually hardcore overclocking he has a channel. And a website that explain this kind of thing. He hasn't done a pcb breakdown of the rs but I did ask him a few hours ago via telegram :)

Smaller heatsink which means higher temps and noise. PCB also isn't as great as the GTR bigger brother so worse overclocking results.

The RS is pretty bad if you want to OC but if you are staying stock clocks its a decent card. Id recommend the Nitro though. It and the GTR seem to be the best cards for OCing

I've OC´d my 3750k to 5.2GHz, but OCing GPUs have never went good for me. Doesn't seem worthwhile. On a STRIX 285 I got a maximum of 7% higher clock before things started crashing and even then it felt unstable. Whats your experiences and would you recommend going for Nitro+ for OC instead of banking the 40$ for a second 480 next year?

I heard the Nitro+ had some noise issues, seeing how you own one, what's your take on that?

Ive had zero issues but heres the thing with the Nitros. Some of the chips are binned the exact same, if not better than a GTR. The chips complete the GTR, and with a GTR chip the Nitro is just as good. And Ive seen a lot of people with "blessed" Nitros

I would be okay with buying the GPU with 1 year warranty but i am pretty sure they have 2-3 years as you said.
