5K Display? Pfft peasants... Introducing Dell 8K 1.07 billion color monitor (UP3218K)

Sounds great and all, but it's too expensive for almost everyone to use. I don't think it will do very well.

Wrong, professionals use displays that are well over 10.000 USD. This monitor would allow a colorist or editor to have 2 4K side-by-side videos playing and still have plenty of room for all the tools. For 5k USD this will fly off the shelf for the pro market imo.

this is past retina, isn't it? what do we call it now? hmm...

Retna isn't a resolution. It's a ratio between pixel density and intended viewing distance. Any screen can be Retina and most are.

This tells you at what distance a screen becomes Retina.

yeah i think i worded that post a little badly...

i was referring to the fact that this display is so pixel-dense

How would you actually connect this? I thought displayport 1.3 maxed out at 8k 30hz. Would you have to use both inputs at once in some way?

I think, like the Dell 5K monitor, it uses the 2 DisplayPort connectors to be able to display the content. So you need a graphics card with 2x DisplayPort, connect them, and then you get the full signal. You can do this with DisplayPort, because the way it works is similar to Ethernet. It is packets of data being sent. So you essentially double the bandwidth by using 2 cables.

To really know for sure, we have to wait for it to be released. Hopefully it isn't "Yea 60Hz, if you put 4K content on it, else it is 30Hz" type of situation. But they have the technology from the 5K monitor they had, so I think they can do it this way.

DisplayPort 1.4 that is coming out does 8K 60Hz from 1 cable. So by the time it comes down in price (basically in a few years when we will have graphics card with it), it should be 1 cable, and not some crazy setup.

As much as i would like to use that monitor, there's really no way to power it for games.

one day that will be standard resolution and 4k will be like 1080p now. a midrange gpu will play games at 4k and high end stuff for 8k.

4k = 8294400 pixels= midrange

8k = 33177600 pixels = high end

I'd say 4k low end and 8k enthusiast

So true though as I get older and have to pay for things more on my own I prefer to cut corners where I can. Its also easier for people who grew up where 1080p was the newest thing than 4k to play at older resolutions happily. Its a lot like how your ancient grandparents love their 720p tv still and never think about upgrading.

34 inches is way to small fo that you would need at least 50" for it not to all be ant sized since windows scaling sucks i mean i struggle with my 13" QHD display on my dell XPS 13

I lurk a lot
