5K Display? Pfft peasants... Introducing Dell 8K 1.07 billion color monitor (UP3218K)

GoodBytes

At CES 2017, Dell annoyances a new monitor is expect to release soon. The monitor is 32inch large and features a 8K true 10-bit color per channel panel. Meaning, beside the fact that it output 7680x4320 resolution (280ppi), it can output 1.07 billion colors. It is also claimed to have 100% coverage of sRGB and Adobe RGB color gamuts, as well as: 100% Rec709, 98% DCI-P3 and >80% Rec2020. In other words, this monitor will be able to produce stunning life-like visuals (assuming the content is adapted, of course).

dell_8k_madness.0.jpeg

The monitor is fully adjustable (tilt, height, pivot), and features an aluminum construct body and strand.

dell-up3218k.jpg?itok=uabPPeF7

The monitor model is UP3218K, oh and yes, it is 60Hz, and yes, it features actual very thin bezels.

The monitor has 2x DisplayPort 1.3, microphone plug (?!), 3x USB 3.0 ports, and 1x high powered USB 3.0 for charging devices.

Dell does say that the target of the monitor is photo professionals and those working with graphics. This is probably because we don't have the GPU computation to drive gaming at such resolution, and perhaps input lag and/or response time isn't the greatest for gaming (my personal guess).

From The Verge:

Quote

The essential thing to remember, says Azor, is that this 8K screen is intended primarily for graphics, design, and photo professionals: those who want to squeeze out every last bit of detail possible from their display and have the budget to spend to make that happen.

The monitor is said to release the 23rd of March of this year.

The monitor will be sold at a low low price of only $4,999.

Sounds great and all, but it's too expensive for almost everyone to use. I don't think it will do very well.

Lemme guess, for gaming at 60FPS on Ultra you're gonna need a minimum of 2 GTX 1080 TI's in SLI that don't exist?

But Titan Xs don't have the power, they're not even as good as a GTX 1070!

Windows scaling on this monitor.

Prepare for a task bar measured in nanometers. Because Windows.

Windows 10 already supports 8K displays. Now 16K... will be a different story. :)

The problem is apps that aren't high-DPI aware. Although as time goes on, more and more software are now high-DPI aware. Still waiting for Steam.. maybe if there was competition, Valve would care.

"Supports". Windows 7/8 also "supported" 4K (Linus' Retina iMac ran W8 for a while) and holy crap everything was ant-sized.

I can't even begin to imagine trying to play Starcraft Brood War on a 4K display, let alone anything bigger

That is because he set Windows display scaling to 100% instead to 175-200%. Windows 8 and up picks by default a recommended size for you, which you can adjust if you want. It looks at your monitor size and resolution to determine this level.
