RX 480 or GTX 1060 for 2560x1080?

I have an Alienware 15 R2 with an i7-6700HQ and GTX 970M with the Graphics Amplifier and an LG 29UM68-P ultrawide monitor that happens to support AMD's FreeSync. I can acquire both the RX 480 and GTX 1060 at around the same price of $200.* I'm having trouble deciding which one to put in my GA - the 1060 performs better and has all of the new Pascal goodies, but the RX 480 will be able to utilize the monitor's FreeSync adaptive refresh rate and could potentially make games look smoother, although people have mixed opinions and results with it. What I'm trying to do is hold FPS at the monitor's rated 75Hz in games such as Overwatch, BeamNG.drive, Rocket League, and Minecraft with a shader pack applied. I don't play anything too graphically intensive, though, like most AAA titles. What should I do?

Why buy a FreeSync monitor if you're not going to hook an AMD card up to it? RX 480 would be my choice here.

480 is doing better then 1060 right now so 480.

Not just Freesync, the 480 overclocks better and it likes higher resolutions more so than the 1060

Absolutely. GTX 1060s stop at 2000-2050 and they're already hitting 1900 at stock, that's not a lot of gain at all. On the other hand, RX 480s reward good coolers and PCBs because they scale with voltage, something that Pascal doesn't. So any RX 480 owner can hit 1400 if they try. I can provide links if you like.

Yes. The MSI Twin Frozr cooler is very good.

Keep in mind that a blower style cooler would work better in an eGPU enclosure as it is very tight and there is not much room for airflow.

I could always leave the hood open, although that would look ugly. The GA has a little exhaust fan, but I don't know how much that will help.

1911 stock to 2126 stable looks like a great OC to me..

I don't think most cards will do 2126, so it's a pretty good OC for a 1060, but it's still only a 11% overclock.

Edit: Can't exactly prove something about most 1060s by showing me the list of the absolute best 1060s out there, and most of those are LN2

You can usually get about 200 out of Pascal. It doesn't do much but it is possible.

I will say it doesn't do much on air. Especially compared to the RX 480. I've caught a guy finish Fire Strike Extreme on air at 1550MHz on an RX 480 GTR on air. The results for 2.8GHz in there have got to be LN2.

I actually also caught a reddit post of someone hitting stable 2.3-2.4 on their 1060 on air, but performance actually took quite a big loss. Let me see if I can find it.
