Xeon E3 1231 V3 for £180?

I am currently looking at all possible options for my 1150 upgrade. I was offered £180 for a "E3 1231 V3" Xeon and wondering if that is worth it? Or would I be better off picking up an i5 4430-4460 for around £100? Thanks

A 1231 v3 is an i7-4790 without an iGPU. So, it's a great CPU, but it depends what you're doing / what GPU you have (you might be better off with the i5 and putting that extra money towards a GPU).

PSU Tier List | CoC

Gaming Build | FreeNAS Server

Spoiler

i5-4690k || Seidon 240m || GTX780 ACX || MSI Z97s SLI Plus || 8GB 2400mhz || 250GB 840 Evo || 1TB WD Blue || H440 (Black/Blue) || Windows 10 Pro || Dell P2414H & BenQ XL2411Z || Ducky Shine Mini || Logitech G502 Proteus Core

Spoiler

FreeNAS 9.3 - Stable || Xeon E3 1230v2 || Supermicro X9SCM-F || 32GB Crucial ECC DDR3 || 3x4TB WD Red (JBOD) || SYBA SI-PEX40064 sata controller || Corsair CX500m || NZXT Source 210.

The only i5 that would be able to outperform that Xeon (in specific cases) would be the K version. And that would only be for single/dual threaded workloads. And even then, the xeon wouldn't be far off) Anything that takes advantage of more cores will perform better on the Xeon.

Only downside is no on-board video, so you need to have a GPU installed. (a non issue for most users of this forum)

When in doubt, re-format.

I am on AM3+ with an FX-4100 atm. The graphics card I would be pairing my upgraded PC with is the current GTX960 I have. I'm looking to game and stream/video rendering for my YouTube Channel. As well as everyday work in MSOffice.

I recently bought an ASRock B85M Pro3 motherboard for my upgrade from AMD.

Sounds like a great deal to me. Although the 4460 for £100 might be slightly better price to performance.
