Labels are only good for people who need validation from others. Who cares what your label is? Be yourself and not worry about what others think or say. If you want to be a gamer then you're a gamer. You don't need a degree, license, or anything else to be one. :)

if you play a game you are a gamer. if you are mocked or put down or shown some sort of antisocial behvaiour by other gamers then you are a gamer. it is not exactly an exclusive club

I used to say that if you play something occasionally and don't really get into it, you aren't really gamer. But things have changed quite a bit. At the moment my stance is that if you spend several hours daily to any game or 10 hours per week to single game, or are really into any game, you are gamer. Like if you have goal and reason why to play games (other than its fun/relaxing). Or if you talk enthusiastically about the game, use terminology related and so on. So in that sense any Pokemon GO player is gamer. Anyone playing poker online is gamer. Even someone spending too much time with Candy Crush Saga (like me) is gamer.

We could as well have debate about which covers PC people more, geek or nerd (which have same translation in Finnish, nörtti).

I think as long as it's an investment because then everyone would be considered a gamer if they only have access to free games.

In the most literal sense of the word, yes you are a "gamer" if you play games.

For marketing purposes, as well as other purposes, "gamer" usually refers to a particular group of people who play games, mostly on gaming consoles or computers.

You won't see someone in a board meeting say they want to target the gamer audience, and then refer to your 80 year old grandma who plays bingo, nor do they refer to your 12 year old sister who plays DrawSomething on her phone. They refer to the ~12-20 year old male audience with gaming Xbones and PS4s.

Personally, I think it's pretty cringe to call yourself a gamer. When I hear gamer I think of a 12 year old child who screams "I'm gonna hack you you cheater!" over his terrible Xbox headset, when you killed him in COD.

Am I a gamer? Other than the few times I get inspired and fire up a game like Diablo 2, or Zeus (master of the Olympus) or whatever, I only play Hearthstone (albeit at a fairly high rank), idle games like AdVenture Capitalist and non-computer games (like Dungeons & Dragons, Cards Against Humanity, Joking Hazard, board games, etc).

Just a filthy casual. Same goes for Facebook games.
