There really isn't a huge difference from generation to generation. It uses less power, and it has a 5% improvement. I can't wait to watch thjs video.

I NEEDED WINDOWS 10 64-BIT SO BADLYxD

The awesome build

Ram: DDR400 2.5 GB   GPU: It's big, that's all I know   Case: A red box   Motherboard: My mother hates me   HDD: I don't have one, I threw it against the wall and it broke, so it is a softdrive   CPU: Intel Pentium 3, Quake get's rekt   OS: Microshaft Winblows XP

Here comes a beast of a laptop, the TravelMate 5742, it's so bad (get the reference )

Ram : 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM  (1066Mhz)     CPU :  Intel Core i5 480M / 2.66 GHz (It turbo's up to 2.93 GHz)     GPU :  Intel HD Graphics     HDD : 500GB (5400 rpm) OS : Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit (Build 1607)

You should know, that Pentium XE 955 doesn't support Idle power stages at all (C1E/SpeedStep are broken in it).

Other than that...
Why latest Tomb Raider, isn't scaling with 2 to 4 CPU Cores in X6800 to QX6700 case ?
Also, jump from last Core 2 to first Core i7 is UNREAL (ie. it's almost 100% !).
WTH you guys did to QX9650 !?

what i take from this is basically, get the I7 4960x lol.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

That's simple, most think that we are nearing the end of Moore's Law. Those people don't understand Moore's law: It is a logarithmic curve which necessarily means that it eventually hits a finite limit at some point. In other words, Moore's Law predicted that improvements would slow down, and they are.

@LinusTech Is CPU innovation dead? Probably not, it's just that the innovations are kept secret. All of the massively huge performance gaining things have pretty much been done, atleast until we switch base technologies (in other words, move from transistors to spintronics). The innovation is coming from finding more efficient, easier, or cheaper, ways of doing things, which are likely proprietary to the point that they are secret.

ENCRYPTION IS NOT A CRIME

I was about to school some kid when I saw Linus posted this.

I was watching fireworks when Linus posted this. I skipped half of the fireworks for this.

Come on now, there is a good thing in middle of this stagnation, you don't have buy new CPUs every year! ^^

@ONOTech Although I agree with you they should have went with either the highest i5 end for every gen or the more normal i7's consumers willing to pay for that sweet performance in gaming the results would be the same with the only difference being the numbers but not their proportions, keeping this in mind this video was educational as it could be.

@straight_stewie  I am only buying a new CPU now when they no longer use silicon :D

Buy Intel CPUs on Amazon: http://geni.us/IntelCPU

Has Intel pushed performance ahead in the last 10 years? Let's take a look!

This was a great video explaing haw Intel has pushed performance over the years. At first I did have an I7 2600K. I was the best one until I got an I7 4790K. But I will admit the I7 2600K is still good today. It will play your games on max with a decent graphics card. :)

I wish you guys tested main-stream CPUs instead of the prosumer grade models, ie Q6600 & unlocked i5s, since that caters to a higher majority of users than top-end flagships. The middle-ground usually experiences less innovation and incremental improvement than the top end, so it definitely would have gotten the point across better. Also, I'm not sure if you clocked them all at the same speed, but that would cut down discrepancies even further.

Still - it''s a refreshing video and one of the better ones LMG has uploaded the past few weeks in my opinion. Keep it up & Happy New Year!

look at the single core performance chart then...

Silverstone FT-05: 8 Broadwell Xeon (6900k soon), Asus X99 A, Asus GTX 1070, 1tb Samsung 850 pro, NH-D15

It was no secret that there hasn't been much movement on the CPU side of things in years now.

Here's hoping AMD shakes things up a bit with Zen...

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700x / GPU: Asus Radeon RX 6750XT OC 12GB / RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB DDR4-3200
MOBO: MSI B450m Gaming Plus / NVME: Corsair MP510 240GB / Case: TT Core v21 / PSU: Seasonic 750W / OS: Win 10 Pro

Linus did it! That absolute mad man! He called intel out for their lack of innovation since the FX chips launched. I've been saying this for months, hopefully people can understand now.

That's short sighted and shows a lack of understanding of how the industry works. All of the major performance gaining things have pretty much been done. All of new performance gains are minor and come from changing the way that the same basic parts we've been using work slightly. Most of the new changes are so slight that they are proprietary to the point of "trade secret" and that's why we don't hear about many of the innovations.

Why is Nvidia, also a microchip company, improving massively each generation then? Why are phone CPUs improving massively? Let me tell you why: competition. Oracle has already demonstrated that Moore's law is still relevant, even Intel has demonstrated this. So why are they still bottlenecking consumers with 2011+ 25% grade performance? They should enable hyperthreading on i5s, give i3s four full cores, stop doing anti consumer practices, and generally lower the price of chips that aren't much better than their 2011 equivalent. Ryzen will force them to do this anyways. It's sad to see companies being so greedy, but it's inherent in human nature. I just pray 2017 will push technology further.

Phone CPUs are improving massively because most of the CPU innovation is on the side of electrical efficiency, which means that we can pack more power into a smaller and less consuming package and fit it into a phone. In shorter words: All that's going on with mobile CPUs is that they are starting to approach desktop CPUs in terms of performance due to getting more performance at a lower power consumption.

GPU's are improving regularly because they are a different technology altogether than CPUs. The basics of them are much less fleshed out than they are for GPCPUs (which is what Intel makes). Massively parallel computing is much different than parallel-sequential computing, the first being a GPU and the second being a CPU. The two things are completely different and to compare them in the way you are attempting to is just silly, it really is apples to oranges. For the most part, CPUs almost always run Single Instruction Single Data instructions (although they can do SIMD), while GPUs whole architecture is based entirely on SIMD, or Single Instruction Multiple Data, meaning that one instruction operates on all data. Furthermore, GPUs get way better performance gains from improvements in memory than CPUs do, because they generally load an entire "frame", do a few instructions on the frame, then offload the entire frame and load the next one, this is called a "blitz" and they even have special hardware called "blitzers" that do this for them very very fast. We are talking running a single instruction on 2000+ data points at a time, whereas even when a CPU uses SIMD it's not really happening at the same time, it just lets you write one instruction that sequentially loads multiple data and runs the instruction on them one after the other. The CPU version is slowed down even more by the fact that the next address for the data comes from doing some math operation on the value in the program counter. In other words, to do SIMD in a GPU takes 1 instruction cycle, while doing SIMD in a CPU takes 2x instruction cycles where x is the number of data points to be operated on.

If you were to enable hyperthreading on an i5, it would become an i7. The difference between high end i5's and low end i7s is literally, hyperthreading. So that's why they don't do that. Also, the benefit of hyperthreading is much more reliant upon the software developer or the problem being solved than just having hyperthreading. All hyperthreading is is giving each physical core a plurality of state registers, program counters, and pipelines, such that a context switch doesn't require reversing the core and reloading everything. Unless the software developer is extremely careful, the only thing that hyperthreading benefits is running multiple programs.
