The Washington Post has retracted its story about Russian hackers penetrating the nation’s electricity grid with a virus found in a Burlington, Vt., electric company laptop.

 

“Authorities say there is no indication of that so far [that Russians had penetrated the US electric grid],” according to an editor’s note attached to a corrected version of the story on the paper’s Web site.

 

“The computer at Burlington Electric that was hacked was not attached to the grid,” the editor’s note read.

It's almost as if the media just makes shit up and hopes reality distorts to match their narrative. Or they just lie for 2 weeks (which is apparently the attention span of the American public) until no one is paying attention, and then correct their story.

A power utility in Vermont, U.S has recently been compromised by a cyberattack. The malware was found on utility control systems.

A code associated with the Russian hacking operation dubbed Grizzly Steppe by the Obama administration has been detected within the system of a Vermont utility, according to U.S. officials.

While the Russians did not actively use the code to disrupt operations of the utility, according to officials who spoke on condition of anonymity in order to discuss a security matter, the penetration of the nation’s electrical grid is significant because it represents a potentially serious vulnerability. Government and utility industry officials regularly monitor the nation’s electrical grid because it is highly computerized and any disruptions can have disastrous implications for the function of medical and emergency services.

American officials, including one senior administration official, said they are not yet sure what the intentions of the Russians might have been. The penetration may have been designed to disrupt the utility’s operations or as a test by the Russians to see whether they could penetrate a portion of the grid.

Federal officials have shared the malware code used in Grizzly Steppe with utility executives nationwide, a senior administration official said, and Vermont utility officials identified it within their operations.

And in addition, the piece of malware is supposedly dubbed "BlackEnegy'. According to WSJ:

The team that is believed to have attacked U.S. and Ukrainian energy companies used malware dubbed BlackEnergy, which functioned like a propped-open door that allowed them to conduct lengthy reconnaissance.

It's speculated that the malware is of Russian origin, by the same group who exposed the DNC. I'm not going to comment on politics. But the piece of code found on the Vermont utility grid is believed to be the same piece of malware that  was found in Ukraine in 2014.

For management purposes. Most networks within power plants are isolated LANs. But outside power plants, it's not uncommon to have connected devices like power switches to control power flow, breakers, or even inverters that couple between different grids or segments of utility lines. It's not as simple as 'just dump power over these cables'. It still  has to be managed to prevent overcurrent and distribution. Its why we have smart meters now. During the middle of the night when power isn't needed as much, power plants  can ramp down electric production, rather than just wasting electricity that isn't being needed.

the electric transmission network is being held back by proprietary systems. they design a power plant with a 100 year life expectancy but no one planned on the high turn over of IT workers and the longevity of vendor locked in systems

Actually the reasoning behind that is counterintuitive but sound. Very, very few people have even the first clue how to hack PATA and the old Unix/Unisys systems. Most of said knowers are dead at this point. It's the same with IBM's old UniSys (no, not UNIX, UniSys) mainframe tech used throughout the financial industry. The resources to learn are dead and gone from the web, so the knowledge base is shrinking for it.

Sure, the "younger" people could learn how to do some of it from those that truly grew up and know the system, but eventually they'll be no one with full knowledge of it.

Yeh but really understanding it takes more than that. Not every variable can be documented, and like troubleshooting any system there could be many layers to a problem that only an experienced problem could feasibly solve quick enough.

Ever had a FDD (5.25", closest to the original in design+function) fail mechanically or electronically, then try to find the components to repair it? Its a nightmare with just the 5.25" FDD, let alone an 8" FDD.

Forget about hacking and the software side of things, what about the physical security? 

If you had 500 sleeper cells spread out in this country working completely in rodent with no contact for 2 years preparing for an attack on a schedule date.

the attack would the bombing of sub stations and power plants which includes dams and all would even dine at the same day and the dead of night.

they would also go after major servers as well of major ispcs.

all they would need is to be some what intelligent in their planning and The making of the explosives and you could bring this country down to its knees.

im surprised this hasn't been done before by the ussr of china quite frankly.
