Impressive feat though. This means 5ghz will be easily attainable on air.

I wouldn't keep my hopes up for it. At the 4790K launch, Intel said that most chips would do 5Ghz on air, but most ended up doing 4.7.

i did see some benchmarks at the new horizons presentation and i think my hopes are not too high because ryzen will pwn the 6900k even so easy to pwn a 7700k

I really want AMD to succeed, they haven't had anything to compete with Intel Since 2011. I do expect the Top End Ryzen to be priced more accordingly to the 6850K, and marketed towards the Video Professionals rather than the Gamers, which is what the 7700K is designed for.

 That's a pretty big jump in logic, I think.

Skylake hit 7025 MHz in a similar attempt here: http://www.pcgamer.com/the-world-record-skylake-overclock-is-an-insane-7ghz/

And 5 GHz is practically unheard of on Skylake, let alone 6 GHz.

Edit: It's been done with Ivy Bridge and Haswell, too.

Remember though that thoes were most likely done with only one core enabled so the fact that they were able to do it with twice as many is really impressive I'm wondering how far it would have gone on just one core one thread for a real comparison.

Okay, but will it run stable at those settings, and stressed, for 5, 7, or even 10 years without giving up the ghost?

The record 8370 overclock is more than 7GHz on all cores.

But even at 7ghz could it outperform like a 4790k at 5ghz (which people have been able to push them before without ln2) GHz don't mean anything if your per core performance can't keep up.

These overclocks would be far more interesting if they beat the record in Cinabench single thread rendering or something... But I guess it's just about stable enough to boot and grab a screenshot of cpu-z...

Even if they use LN2, high volts will wear out the cpu like crazy.

There's no cinebench single thread record. just multicore.

That CPU will be fine btw. It'll probably be retired as a test rig or thrown onto a tray. CPUs last longer the colder they are, especially when they have many volts applied.

yeah, but 2 VOLT, I know crazy vcores are a thing on LN2, that's just a very impressive number.

Old CPUs had 5 volt Vcore and no heatsink or fan and especially no LN2.

But they used to run at around 7 MHz so it was fine.

Feels like a "cool story bro" moment.

Im willing to bet there are no people on LTT that use LN cooling, much less using it for anything productive. It doesn't even prove anything like "what the best case is for overclocking on X chip" because they have very little basis in reality.

Give me "real world" overclocking info, I want to see an average chip hitting 5ghz on water with all cores on and then i will be interested.

Don't mind me just takin my 6700k for a walk  -( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)╯╲__[6700k]

For real though, it's no different than any other hobby where people take it to extremes, cars, rc cars, audio, etc.  OC'ing is actually quite cheap in comparison to other hobbies such as cars & audio.

It's also quite indicative of real world OC info, it gives you a very good idea of which motherboards can get the shit beat of out of them and keep on tickin.

I haven't used LN2 yet, but I've used dry ice multiple times, which is essentially the closest consumerly available easy to get thing to LN2.  Took my 6700k up to near 6ghz with it, and my previous 980 TI to 1800 mhz in Firestrike & unigine valley.

yeah my point was that just because it hits high OC with ln2 doesn't means it will be good on air.
