Rolex question

Rev:)

I need some help on determining the price difference between the full steel and the steel and white gold versions of the Rolex datejust 36mm. I don't need exact pricing just an estimate. :)

You must realize that most Rolex's are faked, Chinese knockoffs and they are pretty damn good these days. Only a Rolex expert would know what to look for. I wouldnt trust any store at all.

The markup on luxury watches is ridiculous. A base rolex will set you back at least 7-9K (USD).

@Jack the Stripper That's why you go to a reputable jewelry store...

Either a Rolex expert or, you know, any random watch enthusiast...

I wouldn't even trust a watch enthusiast for spending that kind of coin. Even if it costs you a $100 for a watch experts 15 minutes, its money well spent.

No it's not.

That's like paying the Geek Squad $100 to unplug a hard drive and plug it back in again.

Jack is completely right. Fake watches can look and feel almost EXACTLY like the real thing. And if they're more expensive like rolex, they can be even harder to tell the difference between a real and fake. An expert is basically the only way to get a true answer because most likely any watch enthusiast will be wrong.

Since when did the LTT community become WIS(s)? This is hardly the place. Head over to the WUS forum and always remember: do your due diligence!

There's a pretty massive overlap between watch experts and watch enthusiasts.

The thing I'm getting caught up on is paying someone to tell you it's real. A friend of mine works at a watch and clock shop that services Rolex watches and they don't charge to check that it's authentic.

I'll never understand watch enthusiasts. With food, you can taste quality differences. With cars you get performance. With watches, a cheap Casio does the exact same thing as a hoity toity wrist accessory. Most people just glance at their phones briefly lol

If you can't tell the difference then what is the difference?

Does a cheap $50 phone match the same quality as a $800 phone? You can't compare a Honda civic to a Lamborghini...

Watch enthusiasts don't really care about what the watch does. They care about how the watch works, how it looks, and how much work went into it.

Repeaters, for instance, aren't sought after because people want their watch to ring at them every hour or so. They're sought after because they're complicated, intricate, and extremely difficult to make.

My gold and steel day-date cost about A$11k. A steel datejust is probably around US$5k, with a gold and steel variant around $7k. Depends on face and numerals as well. Though I'm just assuming you guys have a lot lower tax on luxury items than we do. It can be a lot cheaper internationally - either buy a plane ticket and buy duty free at the airport, or fly to another country, buy at an official dealer and get a tax refund when you leave the country. Probably not worth it on the lower end of the scale, but can have significant savings.

Obviously, don't buy online and don't buy in street markets. Official Rolex dealers are the best place.

Any idiot can can tell the difference between a fake and real Rolex within about 5 seconds of holding it.

Well obviously you don't appreciate the finer things in life. Swiss movement timepieces are a work of art. Everyone is entitled to their opinion so I won't hold it against you.

With that said, I'll never understand grown men that watch anime/manga.

Yet the last 2 watches I have used can't keep time over a week and 2 of the last 3 have given me a rash because of the metal they were made out of.

I wear a watch every day.  I find it a lot easier to look at my watch for the time than to take my phone out.

I can't justify spending 7k+ on a watch.  I have 3 watches that were between $200 and $300.  That's about all I could justify on my income.  But that all look nice and keep good time.

We have a Rolex shop in the city centre and I always look at it in disgust when I go past it. There is no better brand to show the economic divisions in our society.

I would buy one, so when asked for time, I could say "let me check my Rolex."

Judging from your previous post in the thread called "Is Vancouver actually that expensive to live in?" (as well as this one), I'd say you're extremely jealous of other people's financial success. What a shame... I suppose you're right to a certain extent though. People will always measure your success/status by the types of clothes you wear, car you drive, and the sq ft of your house.

I don't see how it's possible for someone to walk into a shop and spend £4000 on a watch whilst if they take a 10-minute walk they'll find people struggling to feet their kids, people being evicted, people in effective slavery because they can't improve their circumstances and are stuck in minimum-wage jobs.

Don't think jealousy is the way to put it. Ever heard of socialism?

Jealousy isn't the driving force of socialism, it's the desire to give everyone a fair chance in life, the desire to allow everyone to have enough to live productive, meaningful lives.

Mechanical watches are art. No one spends that kind of money on a watch just to tell time anymore. If you haven't actually done your research about the art of fine watchmaking but are still mocking it and its buyers, you're just speaking out of ignorance.

If you're spending 6 figures or more on a GOOD brand, then you're contributing to the continuation of an artistic trade that employs hundreds of thousands of talented and hard working men and women. Also, if you spend $20K on a Patek Philippe, it will still be worth that much if you take care of it. I.E. you haven't actually LOST your financial investment. Spend that much on virtually anything else in life, and it'll be worthless and/ or obsolete in 20 years.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolex#Hans_Wilsdorf_Foundation to learn where most of your money for Rolex actually goes. While it's not strictly a non-profit organization, it's still a much better cause than your money for Google and 99% of other corporations, which goes to pad the billionaire pockets of its executives.
