Switching lead acid battery with Lithium ion?

Acek94

Ok, so I just picked up a UPS for $5 at a garage sale in my area. The thing looks in good condition and what not, all that it needs is a replacement battery. So the replacement battery for this is lead acid, and my question is, can the current charging circuit handle it if I get a lithium ion battery?

Please move this thread if it isn't in the correct sub forum, I wasn't sure where to post it. :)

The charging circuitry isn't such a big issue, but the discharging is.. If it discharges the lithium battery too far, then all hell breaks loose and your house will be on fire. If you want to pay a bit more and not worry too much about your house burning down, then get a lithium IRON battery (LiFePo4). At 3.3 volts nominal per cell, if you have a 4 cell LiFe battery then that's 13.2 volts. Almost the same as a 12 volt lead battery. That's what I'd do.

One of my hobbies is radio controlled vehicles, mostly electric ones, so you have to know your stuff or you will get hurt. Just like with computers.
