Stock or something with silver in it and nonconductive.

This is my opinion, it doesn't mean I'm right and is liable to change at any time. I may offend of which I apologize in advance.

I've read that the stock is best guys, but i want to be prepared for the (inevtiable) day when i need to re-install the unit :)

I've also read that AS5 performs poorly SPECIFICALLY with the h100i which is why I decided to post.

I'll look into mx4 and ic diamond, thanks! any preference over those two?

Best thermal pastes are NT-H1, Arctic Cooling MX-4 or IC Diamond. IC Diamond is probably the best performance but a complete pain to spread properly. As for non-conductive it's just a safety thing so you don't short anything out and cause permanent damage to your computer, all the best TIMs tend to be non-conductive anyway.

All thermal pastes that you will proably be using are non-conductive.

The main 3 to consider getting are:

Arctic Silver 5

MX-4

IC Diamond

I really wouldn't think too much about picking between them as they are all fairly similar.

Ah thanks everyone, when you said non-conductive i was thinking in terms of heat-conductivity and that stumped me. Totally makes sense for this to be in the context of  electrical conductivity doh.

I read some horror stories on the IC Diamond, and I've read about AS5 and h100i so I think I'll stick with MX-4. I'll probably look for it on PCPartsPicker for best price, but if you have better ideas, feel free to share.

Thanks very much!

I liked MX-2. For the price when I got it on sale it was really good.

FYI i'll go with Noctua NT-H1  mostly because of its low viscosity and high ease-of-use according to tom's h/w. It even performs marginally better than MX4 for watercooling units so I would be gaining ease-of-use and be no worse off for it.
