It was definitely the power connectors. You shorted them. You covered up the contacts on the PCB, but the power cable and power connectors still have to touch each other, and the power cable isn't waterproof.

...but why?

I could have store 10TB of pictures of children eating on that drive.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

@LinusTech @Slick @nicklmg

So I have a new idea for a series- call it either-

"What the fuck did you think would happen"

or

"We don't know what we expected"

or

"The laws of physics vs Linus"

or

"Being a dad is taking a toll on Linus"

Option 3.

Laws only govern the honest.

liberal use of vaseline on the contact points may well have protected from any short circuits.

This is kind of why when deploying in dusty home environments it's a good idea to use conformal coating on your mobo and gpu, since dust can create havoc, and let's face it, few of us religiously clean the insides of our cases. Fine dust will get through even expensive fan filters, and built up over time, needs to be cleaned out.

Usually don't comment on the videos, but wanted to leave some feedback because I noticed the change in production.

I'm actually enjoying the pacing of the real world tests and build log videos with a more "as if I'm really there" vibe. They seem more engaging and less cause and effect. The only criticism I have is less shaky cam. Either way, keep it up. Enjoying the content as usual.

This is a real suggestion. Go to the auto parts store and buy dielectric grease. Goop it all over every terminal you sanded. Then try it in water again.

There's no reason it can't work in water if you do that.

Wouldn't the mineral oil work without the coating on a helium drive anyway?

I do run a WD Red with helium submerged in mineral oil since 6 month and it still works fine.

But I used some coating too just to make sure the mineral oil doesn't damage the sealing of the HDD.

Mineral oil and 40 kg aluminium heat sinks are a perfect combination: 73 cores and a Titan X, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Oil

Why would anyone put his hard drive under water?

Anyways, a buildlog with a whole computer under water would be fun!

In this video, Linus' computer got a blue screen error, he said it may have been a LAN issue. Can anyone confirm this or help me out?? I have been having this same issue for two days now and have tried everything
