RX 470 or RX 480 or GTX 1060?

Mobby Dick

Hey guys,

looking for a new graphics card. I could get a

- RX 470 4gb (Sapphire Nitro+) for 209€

- RX 480 4gb (Sapphire Nitro+) for 225€

- GTX 1060 3gb (not sure which model to get) for around 240€

What can you recommend for 1080p gaming?

For those prices, RX 480 4GB. Then i have to question why not get the 8GB Model? It doesn't cost alot more, atleast not in the UK.

RX 480. 3GB 1060 is cut down slightly, but all these options are almost overkill for 1080p gaming.

480 benches better overall, and AMD are getting their shit together when it comes to drivers.

idk

480. AMD cards almost always have better longevity and better performance down the line with driver updates.

Almost overkill. 1060/480 can handle pretty much most modern games at max 1080p.

idk

Not to the point thta I consider overkill. Higher and more demanding game might not reach that perfect 60fps (e.g. Crysis 3)

You said all these options are overkill. But is the RX 470 really overkill?

rx 480 4GB is the best one :P

If you want to keep your card for a while i suggest trying to get the 8GB model. If you can't, no problem, atm it doesn't matter that much but just keep in mind that in a few years the lack of VRAM might start to show issues.

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

I still can't turn on things like SSAA in Rise of the Tomb Raider, or MSAA in Deus Ex Mankind Divided at 1080p and maintain 60 FPS, and that's with a GTX 1070. While I do fine in The Witcher 3, I just barely ride 60–65 FPS with the settings/graphic mods/.ini tweaks I use. An RX 480 is definitely nowhere near "overkill" for those.

Plus, how long do you intend to use this card? Games in two years probably won't run just like games do right this moment. It usually pays to buy something that's at least a little more powerful than what you strictly need right now.

AMD has had 1 major issue with a driver update in the past year or so

Rx 480!
From more recent benchmarks, we can see that AMD optimized their drivers a lot better than before, and they now beat the 1060 in most games

Almost overkill for 1080p gaming? I think not, you can't even run R6S 1080p@mixed high and ultra settings with no AA on a 1060 3GB (with no suttering due to not enough vram) as that chomps up 3.6GB of vRAM...

R6S isn't even that vRAM intensive...

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

My bad, edited my post as I forgot to say "without stuttering due to vRAM" :P

edit: You have a 4GB 960 anyway so...vRAM isn't really a problem for ye

I'd go with the 480. The performance for 1080p gaming is there for all 3, but thinking a bit longterm, the 60 series card of the Nvidia line-up doesn't last very long, specially the 3 gig 1060 with the relatively small memory buffer and cut down GPU. On the other hand, you can still buy AMD cards as old as 2011 for reasonable prices on Ebay because they stay relevant longer than Nvidia.

Come to think of it, we may see a price drop if AMD releases the higher end GPUs and Nvidia releases the 1080ti, but this is very ignorant speculation, can someone tell me if there's some validity to this, or if I'm talking nonsense you can reply with an ironic Pepe meme.
