South Carolina law would force Anti-Porn filter on new PCs; $20 to remove

xD don't worry, we can still use a VPN like tunnelbear if we really need to.

Also the concept of a hardware chip that does some kind of protection has been proven a bad idea in the past.

I can't find it immediately but it was iirc before 2000 soo... I don't expect this to work either!

V-Chip in payTV boxes I think? And then there's the whole fact it will be as useless as the whole TPM bullshit M$ has been trying to push as part of the evolution of Palladium/NGSCM (aka "Trusted Windows") which is rather damn UNtrustworthy as a concept and how it's implimented as parts and a whole.

Even if this gets somehow magically implemented, keep in mind there are smartphones. People watch porn even on their DS yo.

I see two possible outcomes from this:

1) device manufacturers stop selling their devices in South Carolina

2) device manufacturers implement a software block across the board everywhere.

I can't see any major manufacturers making seperate SKUs just for one state...

it probably can be enabled and disabled easily if they implement it making it so you can easily manage devices region bound without burdening everyone with other country's there rules.

I applaud this move. Porn, much like cigarettes, is a crutch for the weak and feeble-minded. South Carolina should also enact a minute-by-minute tax on porn. This is how we shape a better society.

Unless a hardware based solution looks for watermarks, I fail to see how one could be implemented without negatively impacting performance (that is, if such a block targets all content including locally stored content). Of course, it is Doubtful that politicians consider feasibility of controlling an open platform as the PC.

Do they (the tech companies) really care? If this is a universal solution, all performance is decreased, so in relation to others, they'd still rank the same.

The government is not benevolent and is not intelligent.  They don't care about your performance.

Not sure whether you're joking or not, but freedom, not socialism, is one of the things that makes America great.  I am personally against porn too, but that does not mean that I want it eradicated and/or censored (obviously excluding child porn and the such).  A famous English writer once wrote, "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."  (https://www.google.com/amp/quoteinvestigator.com/2015/06/01/defend-say/amp/?client=ms-android-verizon)

This is lawmaking at its best:

- we come up with a "problem" so we can claim we do something about it/

- we mandate companies to implement a device that doesn't really exist, "they'll figure something out - we put a man in the moon, right? Surely we can block porn".

- we claim success, since our law (supposedly) directly does what we claimed needed to be done for unknwon reasons.

- we sit back and watch lawyers make money for years out of our stupidity

I mean, if you are going to pass laws forcing people to invent things, why not just state that all potato farmers should "add a gene to their potatoes that solves hunger around the world", then just establish a fine for lazy farmers who still grow normal potatoes?

Freedom makes America stupid.

Eh, the Founders lacked modern context. There are tons of places where just having the base 10 amendments can't cover the scope of freedom and certainly can't cover the scope of federal level security.

this would be a hardware level lock

The good thing about a hardware lock is more people will be getting into electronics or employing the services of those who are educated. So I support this law that will give me work.

If the truth hurts, it aint my fault. Freedom allows you to be complacent and stupid with minimal consequence. And the Founders wanted only those white men who owned (iirc) at least 10 acres of land and a few thousand (now million) dollars to be able to vote.

You also can't reconcile the desire to have a well-equipped law enforcement system if you allow encryption to exist. If communication can never be read, you can't prove collusion between criminals. The founders were smart, but they were ignorant.

I'm what's right with America. I have the freedom to say this, I exercise that freedom, and I dare anyone to prove me wrong, because the free flow of ideas is the only way to get the rest of the planet informed and improved.

Minimum consequences? Where do you get this? With freedom, as in social and economical, your actions impacts on you almost instantly. Want to watch porn and procrastinate? Well, do it, but face the consequences of a shallow, and very sad life, BUT, no one else is affected.

I DO NOT WANT a well-equipped law enforcement, I prefer a well equipped populace.

You are free to say what you want mate, excersice that freedom, but don't expect people not to disagree vocally aggressive with you when you want to take away their freedom.

No, often in a free system those consequences are LOOONG delayed and often way out of view until they all hit simultaneously. To have freedom, you must have enlightenment (read the Federalist Papers if you care to argue that point).

Not true, because your decrease in productivity and social interaction do affect society as a whole, often profoundly.

Without proper law enforcement, having law is pointless. Everyone from Plato to Niche agrees on that.

I expected the resistance, and I expected it to be this weak up front.

No, society does not get affected as a hole, because no individual owes anything to this so called "society".

The only way you get to enforce law 100% effectively is through fear and murder, so, you would need a lawless military to truly have a "lawful" country.

let's not forget that in the USA it's more likely to be in a state where it is legal to have sexual interaction with a horse but illegal to do with someone of the same sex/gender.

May the light have your back and your ISO low.
