South Carolina law would force Anti-Porn filter on new PCs; $20 to remove

PCgamer324

Inb4 government / manufacturer telemetry bundled with the "filter".

The feeing is like buying your own house - your safe haven - but it must have a government CCTV installed inside.

Dafuq has this got to do with human trafficking? You mean people who watch porn are human traffickers?

No confidence in your own people?

Doesn't the idiot who came up with this know we can just reinstall vanilla Windows?

Some porn is produced with human trafficking victims.

Who knows the real percentage of it though.  But it exists.

But that doesn't change his point. Some food is made/picked/farmed by illegal immigrants. Am I supporting illegal immigration because I eat food? Do we need to put anti-food chips in our refrigerators?

Quick thoughts on system: I7 is extremely quick and I'm glad I spent the extra for hyper-threading. I regret my decision to get the GTX 970, it has horrible coil whine. There isn't any excuse for this terrible whine I and others are having. I HIGHLY recommend a 144hz monitor. Future Improvements/upgrades: Rubber fan mounts, basic speakers, more ram (for a total of 16gb), replace GPU.

144hz is love. 144hz is life. I like to submit unfinished posts then do about 20 edits. I like the Night Theme too.

It's always the ass holes who want small government isn't it? "Obama care is big government messing with people'still personal choices! Now hand me 20 bucks so you can watch porn you sex trafficking child molester!".

Part of me would like for them to create a register of people who unlocked the porn so we can see all these legislator's names plastered all over it.

As for porn being too accessible, well, educate the children in sex Ed and teach them that porn is not a relationship replacement. But of course teaching kid's sex Ed is probably evil in those old fart's eyes.

How the hell would a hardware block even work? I am thoroughly confused as to why this is thought to be possible.

Case: Meatbag, humanoid - APU: Human Brain version 1.53 (stock clock) - Storage: 100TB SND (Squishy Neuron Drive) - PSU: a combined 500W of Mitochondrial cells - Optical Drives: 2 Oculi, with corrective lenses.

Legislators were suggesting this be some form of hardware level device: anti-porn "chip", if they even know what that means...

if its a chip, just pull it and it would probably be fine

fuck right off, you aren't installing shit on my new PC.

yep but you can also just use powershell, atleas on windows to remove any software. its a pain but thats how you get rid of the XBOX app on windows 10

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

While a software based block would be cheap enough to implement, anyone with any trace of PC know how will easily bypass this block. Download new Windows image, install. Or run Linux if Microsoft IP bans SC from vanilla Windows.

or, you know, nuke it with powershell lol

If this is going to be a hardware based thing it will probabbly be a chip on the motherboard, and if thats the case it will be relativly easy to hardware mod away/disable with BIOS hacking, registery hacking or software tools. even if this becomes a thing its not going to stop people from getting free porn in NC, people will find ways around it with hacks

true - but you don't know what it will install in the first place, and what security holes it's gonna open, what its gonna leave behind, etc.

idk

while I agree undesired popups are cancer, this doesn't seem to be what they are truly after. As usual, uninformed bureaucrats take hardly feasible decisions on things they don't understand. Also, the fee is ridiculous -  demanding citizens to ask for STATE PERMISSION to watch porn (and pay for it, to add insult to injury)  is an unacceptable violation of privacy in my opinion.

Either way even if I lived there I wouldn't be affected - I certainly would not willingly install pointless bloat on my machine and I would fresh install on a prebuilt or laptop anyway.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

yes this will be horrible no matter what way they implement it, but people will get around it and get the free porn without paying $20. this is not going to stop teens and children from accessing porn on the internet, they will find ways around it and in that way this would be great because its making the next generation even better at computers so thats something

solid buissness plan lol. but that is basically what i would think is going to happen, i doubt this will go through tbh but people could also just order from out of state or drive to the next state over for their computer shopping. its not a verry big state so doing that would still be a viable option

...what about local files?

Everytime there's an anti-porn mess it seems like they keep forgetting you can download them stupidly easily.

Unless they are going to ban every torrent site, it's still easy to get for most people...

And what are they planning to do anyway? Block google because if you search for whatever images you want that's exactly what you get?

It's stupid, a waste of time and money and won't work.

I wouldn't be so sure, while there are certainly ways to circumvent a block like this it's easy to fall into traps while looking for them - I'm sure there would be plenty of shady websites ready to plant malware and crapware on those kids' pcs by promising them it would get them porn.

most scams are easy to spot, but im sure a bunch of people will suffer in more ways then having to pay the $20 because of as you said malware. and as @samcool55 said they cant block everything, also what about the dark web? all the CP and shit on there is something they cant block.

"It's where almost everybody has access to a computer now. It's porn on demand," Chumley told the Spartanburg Herald Journal over the weekend. "We have to start somewhere ... we're bringing attention to it. We're not being political. It's an issue I'm pretty passionate about."

Is it just me that is wondering why "porn on demand" is a problem?

Oh right, because porn is the cause of all evil and if you look at it for even a second you become a rapist. I forgot.

xD don't worry, we can still use a VPN like tunnelbear if we really need to.

Also the concept of a hardware chip that does some kind of protection has been proven a bad idea in the past.

I can't find it immediately but it was iirc before 2000 soo... I don't expect this to work either!
