AMD Zen Rysen / Intel Kaby Lake only on Windows 10? Is this true?

pete_agreatguy

Hi all,

I currently run an i7 920 overclocked at 4GHz so am way behind in technology.

I have decided to wait for AMD Zen (Rysen) before deciding which CPU to go with because it looks promising so far.

However, I heard they are only going to be supported by Windows 10? Is this true? If so, why? I like Windows 7 and would prefer to keep it over 10.

Why though? Is this Microsoft pushing it?

I would just buy skylake instead then. Kabylake is not any faster and I am not that hopeful for Zen, nothing wrong with win 10 though, its fine for me.

Please quote our replys so we get a notification and can reply easily. Never cheap out on a PSU, or I will come to watch the fireworks.

@rn8686 My concern is that Windows 10 may not support my Flight Sim and old games that I still love to play:

i.e. Flight Simulator 2004 (aka FS9) with a ton of addons - I never upgraded because I spent a fortune on the lot .... MS Train Simulator, C & C Generals, Star Trek Command 3.

Don't get me wrong, I do like Windows 10 over 8.1 but Windows 7 for me works really well with the old games.

Mainly due to the new architectures, that MS is too lazy to implement on older Windows versions (apparently they do not work by default or lack optimization or something).

Yeah it's apparently a lot of work to get new CPU's running on your OS according to Microsoft so they are only going to do it on the version that makes them money today. They are not even going to allow all version of Windows 10 to run new CPU's, once a version of Windows 10 (ie:1607) reaches it's end of life it won't get new CPU support anymore.

Does anyone know if you could run Windows 7 x64 within Windows 10? If so this could be an option for my older games. Long but it would work as I've done this in the past with XP running in a VMware environment to get a game working on Win 7.

Absolutely. I'm in fact looking into VM's at the moment to find one to run games all the way back to Windows 9x compatible games.

@DELTAprime look into using D Fend if it is a dos based game. That emulator is fantastic! I used that to get Star Trek A Final Unity working on Win 7 x64.

Yes, it will (acording to press releases) only support windows 10 and, since this is linked to the cernal, A work around would be next to impossible. You can run a VM of windows 7 to your hearts content to run all your old games. Honestly, I side with AMD here. Locking out older OSs will lead to more stable systems in the long run.

Nope, not dos based, actual Win9x. I could do some hackery (downloading user made patches and running scripts) to get them running in Windows 10 but for security I'd rather stick them in a VM.

You can not dual boot. The CPU will not accept windows 7 as a valid OS

With vertulisation support on your cpu (all new cpus support thgis so its a non issue) and IOMMU hardware pass through support windows 7 64 in hyperV will run with almost the same performance as natively and is one solution on windows 10.

Another is just keeping the older system and using input director as an IP KM switch, which is what I've been doing for a while now with an XP system for games. This has worked much better for me since it also dual boots in 98se and gives me a wide range of native support for older DX api's and MS-DOS.

I hate to lay it on thick, but this isn't news.  Windows 7 and Windows 8 don't even support the Z170 chipset correctly, and I don't think the A88X chipset supports Windows 7 even.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

Like you said, liking an OS os an opinion. And people have differing opinions, for example:

Windows 10 forces restarts and updates onto users, even when in the middle of doing work (even happened to luke on WAN before). They force you to work within restrictive "active hours", and once outside of those (which you cannot set to the entire day), it will force restarts. It may let you delay it once, but at some point it will not care. This is dealbreaking for me.

It also does far more data mining, which I don't care about as much as most people.

Furthermore, Windows 10 installs default apps that cannot be uninstalled by conventional means, and the only way I could get rid of them was through complex work with file ownership, which didn't even get rid of their start icons, and they get reinstalled in like a week. Not acceptable for me, again. Especially on devices with low storage capacity.

Even more damaging is the fact that they load apps they "suggest (get paid for)" like Candy Crush, etc. onto your machine without explicit permission. Again, not acceptable.

I sincerely hope that these problems get fixed by MS. I get that some of these features (restarts and forced updating) are for the masses, but that doesn't mean an option cannot be put into a menu (even somewhere "advanced" so average users won't find it) to turn these things off.

As for the money-making things (data mining, force installs of apps), that I see as a byproduct of pirating. so many people these days refuse to pay for software, which is horrible. I recently had a discussion with some youtube commenters who said the would not take a copy of windows off the shelf at best buy, but were perfectly willing to pirate it at home, even though they are literally thieving the same product! This blatant disregard for the law, for what is right, and for the hard work of the individuals at Microsoft is what has forced them to seek alternate revenue streams, so I am more angry at the community than them for that.

Sorry about the rant, back on point: Windows ten (in my opinion, just like you said), sucks. These are large issues I cannot look past, so I hope MS fixes them (preferably), or at least makes the new CPUs work with 8.1.
