Thoughts on HGST/Hitachi Deskstar Drives

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

Should I still have it running 24/7? I have already been running one of their 2tb drives (Hitachi HUA723020ALA641) for... approximately according to smart 3,003 hours.

I know people say HGST/Hitachi are the kings of the hard drive market, but what are your thoughts?

Any bad experiences to say?

I can share with you the smart statistics, if you care.

They are. At least reliability-wise.

But then again, I have an external 1.5TB WD green I bought in 2008 and no sector errors at all. And that bastard has an immense power-on time

Wow, just a baby that drive...

Yeah, I bought it and installed linux on it, then just let it run since then. My power went out sometime 45 days ago, so thats why it restarted... but other than that, its just been running 24/7. Is this okay? Do you do the same thing? What is your usage for that drive like?

Hrmpf. I hear bad things about WD these days... are the old versions of their hard drives really that good?

Yeah they run on Linux, in RAID.

Hm, WD is pretty reliable in general. Never had a WD drive fail on me.

Even Seagate is upping their game on the larger drives nowadays. But even then I wouldn't buy from them, tbh.

Btw, HGST is owned by WD.

Let me just turn on my PC and I'll post the smart status of that green.

Well even within a manufacturer's product line, there can be duds.  Seagates have had a bad rep over the past few years, but I have a few Seagates pushing close to 80,000 hours.

Wow! That is surprisingly good! For a hard drive that has been alive for that long...

And yes, it was a 2tb seagate
