Is shared Wifi possible?

HoneyBooBoo

I just built my first PC :D

I've encountered a few problems (finding out my PSU doesn't reach the CPU header so I need to have my PSU ontop of my case til I get an extender and realising my optical drive wasn't plugged in all the way) but one of the stupidest things is that I had a friend who was going to give me an ethernet cord but he forgot to bring it... Soooo, for the few days I have to wait until he comes back with the cable I was wondering if there was anyway that I could use the wifi from a laptop/phone to be shared with my PC so that I can essentially use wifi on my PC.

Any and all ideas would be appreciated, thanks.

Yes. That was stupid.

You're going to need either Wi-Fi or Ethernet on your desktop to connect to your modem. If your phone supports it, you may be able to share it's connection over USB.

USB tethering to a phone will work ... BUT be careful that you understand the COST and your download limits - both of which vary dramatically by country.

ie: make sure you tether to your local WiFi, and not accidently to the Phones Mobile Broadband.

If you had a spare ethernet cable (maybe one too short for where the PC will be once completed) you can tether your laptop's wireless adapter through it's ethernet port.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

I tried that before and it didn't seem to work, my PC was picking up that there was an internet connection but it wouldn't join it.

You need to do more than jack it in.  You'll need to bridge the connections between the laptops wifi and the laptops Ethernet port.
