Something Blew Up!?!?!

HungryHamster

Hey everyone,

I'm in a bit of a panic because something literally just when pop in my computer and there was a bunch of electronics smelling smoke that visibly came out. I'm trying to figure out what it could have been.

I left my PC on overnight, came back and did some web surfing, then I loaded up Witcher 3 and as soon as I got in game, my PC went out (but not the power because mobo lights were still on). It wouldn't even start up again until I power cycled the PSU.

The weirdest thing is that now everything seems completely fine. I was able to load up a few games again and I have no issues. I'm still really worried about what exploded and why it did so. What are some of the possibilities here? It's worth noting I have 2 EVGA GTX 1080 FTWs, but the ones I'm using have the thermal pads installed. Maybe a capacitor popped? Would that make sense? I've inspected everything and I can't find any obvious signs of damage.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

remove everything from the case and inspect every component

open the video card and inspect the PCBs

this, plus check the PSU through the fan grille if you can see any obvious signs of damage.

From personal experience I can tell you it's probably a capacitor in one of the graphics cards, most likely a part of the power delivery circuit. When one of those capacitors blows, if it doesn't do too much damage to the surrounding circuitry the card may still be able to operate just fine, since power delivery is usually composed of a few parallel modules that have a high tolerance and can work independently from one another. You should still open up the cards to see the damage for yourself.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Had a few pops with different PCs. Like said above, most likely is a capacitor. They usually keep working (unless they spew their guts) till you pit a load on them.

Take everything apart and look for stuff like this image. Look carefully.
