Wiring a Network Connection

Zoravar

I'm running a couple ethernet cables from one room to another and had a question about terminations.

Normally I would want to use a keystone on one end and a patch panel on the other, with small patch cable running the last couple feet to the switch.  But this is being done with minimal cost.

Is there any problem with having the keystone on one end and a regular RJ-45 on the other going straight into the switch (other than it being a little non-standard)?

That will work fine, just make sure that the wire are wired correctly.

Awesome! Thank you.

It will work fine. Patch panels just make organising and moving connections easier, they're not necessary, especially if this is for a home network.

Yes, this is a home network. Only three connections total (maybe four).

Yeah, really no need for a patch panel then. If you need to label the cables, just use a sticky label or something instead of on the front a patch panel.

It won't look as clean as it would with a patch panel, but that's likely not a big issue.

Yeah, the one end will look nice with the keystone and cover plate, but the switch end is sitting in an unfinished basement and doesn't need to look perfect.

I have a label maker I was going to use on the wallplate.  The switch end is getting duct tape with a sharpie :D

Most wallplates should have a label above the port. At least, the Euro spec ones do (technically, they're part of the keystone module), not sure how different it is in the US.

This is the module we use in Europe:

In a wallplate:

You Euro people and your fancy built-in labeling :P.

I'm sure they have somthing similar in the US, but this is the type I have.  I'm just going to put an A,B,C or 1,2,3 on one of the sides.

The jacks look like this (except in white):

With that kind of faceplate, you may as well just use a Sharpie to write it on.

You could always add a patch panel later if you feel it's needed, anyway.

True haha.

Honestly, I don't think it will ever be needed, but it is an option.  This is just to get internet to an area where the wireless isn't very strong.  Plus, I'll be moving in about a year, so I don't foresee much additional expansion between now and then.
