Windows 10 now runs on ARM, MS demos Photoshop running on Snapdragon 820

Whatever are Microsoft plans with bringing the whole of windows into ARM, they did it, though you can see task manager showing the CPU being at 10% usage on pretty much doing nothing.

So, whatever system that will come from OEMs, it should be seen as a low-cost system that runs Windows 10 full (probably Home edition), with desktop and all, but you may want to stick with Universal Apps, but Win32 apps like Firefox, Chrome, Audacity, Steam, etc, will run. Perhaps not the best experience ever, but it will run, giving you that option, especially if these system are like sub-300$, I think it is interesting.. sure would beat Chromebooks, which I think is what MS is aiming at. And maybe, in the future, better, more power hungry ARM chips will be made for laptop environment, and would replace, the, now gone: Atom based CPU powered laptops/tablets, even provide a better experience than those chips.

 

 

To make this a reality, Microsoft is working with Qualcomm on this project. And systems are expected to be released sometime in 2017 (probably with the release of Windows 10 Redstone 3, which was rumored before to have x86 emulation for Windows 10 Mobile OS under Continuum)

 

 

So by the end of 2017, the picture of Windows 10 will change a bit

• Windows 10 will be running on x86 Intel, AMD and now ARM based CPUs.
• Windows 10 Mobile will be phone centric OS with a GUI tailored for such design, without a desktop until you connect it to a display (Continuum), where only then you can run x86 WIn32 apps.

Could this mean AMD jumping in making its own ARM based APU chip? Would Nvidia Tegra chips powered system, beside the Nintendo Switch, be a reality?

This really adds a lot of new opportunity for these companies.

Right now MS is hosting the WinHEC conference in china, the main purpose of the conference is to talk about hardware around the windows ecosystem, there is where the was announcement in partnership with Qualcomm.

Microsoft is referring to hardware running this version of windows as cellular PC's and gist of it is to bring the entire suit of win32 software into more portable devices like phones, this is something current phones with windows can't do at all.

There's not much else to say, there's no date of when this version of windows is coming out at all or even in which form is going to or what kind of hardware will come out alongside it other that is going to have a Qualcomm chip.

Probably not a WP comeback, but more of Microsoft catering to the creatives more than Apple is. Apple really dropped the ball this year for graphic artists.

something that i just though, is that they went all the way to emulate x86 in ARM but will they port their dependencies to it to? i mean is this takes off it would dumb to not port their visual C++ runtime into ARM to.

i wouldnt mind a Nvidia tegra replacing my desktop. A nice fanless box i can mount on the back of my monitor for some CSGO. I don't see x86 emulation on arm taking off. Users will get annoyed and MS will come out with some nice cross compiling tools for their APIs

Don't count on it. It's using an older chipset and Qualcomm doesn't like supporting anything over three years old.

dude arm chip are weak, your phone can't really compare with a fully fledged desktop or a laptop. arm focus on low power chips. They migh be the future but not for a very long time. even a intel low power i7 beats anything arm has to offer.

I've known about that phone since it was announced, but afaik it doesn't run x86 Windows 10.

There's actually a way to run x86 apps on an antiquated Surface RT but from the looks of it, it's not easy. Good thing Microsoft did it officially in order to save the tanking PC sales. The problem with Windows RT is that it looks a lot like Windows 8 but it doesn't the same apps as Windows 8 so people are confused. Good thing they've figured it out. Can't wait to see a tablet convertible running on a Snapdragon SoC. But I don't think Qualcomm will soon sell Snapdragon CPUs like Intel and AMD. I don't even think any of the current ARM chips (including Apple's A series chips) can run Triple-A titles anytime soon. The Adreno 530 GPU won't even come close to the performance of a GTX 1070. This is probably one of Microsoft's way to compete with the very affordable Chromebooks.

 

If this succeeds, I bet that Apple will soon use their own A-series chips for the low end 12" MacBook instead of the Intel Core M and it will be running full macOS, not iOS.

This isn't x86 windows 10... it is ARM Windows emulating x86.

 

It is exactly what the x3 is. in fact there are no other known devices with that configuration so it's almost guaranteed to be from the x3.
