Anybody remember when prebuilt computers had those ducts over the processor?

So I got a nostalgia blast today. Saw an old dell optiplex with one of those plastic ducts over the processor in a pawn shop. It actually got me to thinking, how hard would it be to mod one of those into a modern case and would it improve temperatures with air cooling at all? What kind of limitations would there be with things like choice of cooler, difficulty mounting it to the board if necessary, etc.

Well it a small passive heat sink with no fan attached so it is kind of a must

I wouldn't expect anything amazing, maybe a few degrees or so. Most of the time I've seen ducted CPU cooling is to comply with the BTX standard, and that just had a single 120mm case fan mounted on the front of the case.

 

It's also a crapshoot what the airflow is by the time the air reaches the heat sink.

I had one of these back in the day. I took it apart when it broken and it's had a beautiful copper heat sink at the end of the duct.

It would depend much of case and cooler. Modding one into case is easy part. But you don't really want to direct air from front fans to single spots. Those intakes do most of general cooling all over the case. GPU, CPU, HDDs etc. With something like side fan, there might be something good. But only if you have down-draft cooler.

I can't count the number if times I saw them when dad was alive and running his own buisness. Talk about memories! They are great for down draft coolers.

Instructions for frustration management:  

1) Sit at desk.   2) Repeatedly slam forehead against desk.
