Children’s Headphones May Carry Risk of Hearing Loss

I would be upset too if a product did not work as advertised.

Unless you have electronics in the headphones, you can just crank them louder.

but isn't that what they imply by stating that their max volume output is 93 decibel which it goes over by 10 decibels in their testing

Well regardless my hearing is going to go downhill regardless of the fact that I don't listen to loud music or anything loud via headphones, however wasn't this already common knowledge

What you mean you don't have perfect 20KHz hearing like the rest of us? [/s]

(on a side note, I ran into a comment on an audio article that claimed they had perfect hearing (or maybe it was higher, either way, BS). I called them out on it and they said they went to the doctor to verify. When I pressed for proof, because you know, 20KHz hearing is unheard of for an adult, they got all flustered and gave up)

FFS this is basic logic. "oh you loose hearing if you listen to music that is too loud" NO SHIT SHERLOCK. That is like saying "oh you die, if you don't eat or drink anything ever again".

I swear people are getting dumber and dumber.

Heck I am sure that there is a app, that would let a parrent limit the max listning levels. If there isn't then there you go, I just gave you a billion dollar idea.

But the point wasn't that  you loose hearing if you listen to music that is too loud, headphones that say they are good for you, actually aren't. And it goes into testing those

Well I have stape degeneration (bone in my ear is dissolving) thus I will eventually go deaf without surgery or some other treatment, as for perfect hearing I don't think that is even a thing, even 20/20 vision isn't perfect just "good enough" (luckily I have 20/20 so I don't need glasses)

As for range mine goes to 16 or 18Khz (can't remember) for now

Well, "perfect" in the sense that 20KHz is the accepted upper limit of human hearing. For an infant.

Too lazy to check up on each device, but there are existing methods to control sound level output. You can expect some manufacturing variation so maybe some are slightly out, depending on how the test is done, but there is no excuse to go way over.

For analog devices, there are two main ways to limit: 1, by using an electrical limiting device that prevents the level going to the speakers being too loud. This can work regardless of incoming level, but may degrade sound quality during limiting. 2, by limiting the sensitivity such that, for a nominal playback level, the sound level would be safe. This has been a requirement in the EU for portable personal music playing devices (mp3 players, smartphones and similar). You may see in Android or iOS a warning if you try to increase the volume setting too high, although they usually offer an override too. This is an ecosystem requirement, where players are limited in output, and headphones are limited in sensitivity. Note it only applies to portable devices, so you can still turn your home amp up to 11 if you want to.

For digital devices it can be simpler. Due to signal representation, there is a hard upper limit. You can simply map that to a certain sound level.

And for the hearing damage mentioned here, it isn't a sudden loss. Prolonged exposure to higher levels gradually damages hearing. More sound, faster loss.

Also human hearing frequency range isn't as sharp as you may think. It is a gradual falloff so you can hear sounds a bit beyond nominal, but you might have to turn it up to hear it in the absence of other sounds. I'm not familiar with how hearing tests are carried out but presumably they would be at a given level. In a similar way, human eyes can see near infra-red, providing there is enough of it, and you block out enough conventional visible light.

I was about to write a post talking about "back in my day we did not have limiters on headphones. We didn't even have special headphones for children and we turned out fine"... Then I remembered that I have tinnitus... So maybe this is good after all.

Remember kids, be careful with your senses. If you fuck them up while you're young you'll live with it forever.

third i blame  the parents for doing the one job they should be doing right wrong

"Headphones can cause hearing loss".

No fucking shit.

In other news, the sky is blue, politicians are corrupt, corporations would mug people if they could (rather than providing a service) and WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE SOMEDAY.

This is getting out of hand. It isn't a manufactures problem to deal if they don't specifically say won't cause hearing loss. Watch your kids better and if you can't don't have kids.

as someone with natural hearing loss all I can say is that I'm amazed how long it took them to figure this out.

audio limiting is there with a reason on mobile devices!

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

no shit various sherlocks. headphone cause hearing loss. Heard this shit when I was a kid all the time. And what do you know, a lot of my friends have hearing loss and tinnitus and shit and I don't really.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

From LilGadgets: We've had quite a few questions about this article so here's a quick answer. We can't recreate the exact conditions of the test ran by Wirecutter so unfortunately we can't answer to the accuracy of their results and claims. What we can say is that we do industry-standard testing during production on each and every headphone with an electroacoustic test meter (the volume limiting we set is on both the internal circuitry as well as the audio drivers). We then take a large sample size post-production to once more test and ensure that the output is within the db range we specify and advertise. You can read more here: https://www.lilgadgets.com/blogs/faq/volume-testing-methodology.

We are in contact with Wirecutter to further understand their testing and investigate how the results of their 1 test on 1 headphone could vary so greatly with the dozens of tests we run on 1000s of headphones. Perhaps we can merge some of their methodology with the audio manufacturing industry norms and create an even better method. With two young children ourselves, child safety is always our priority.

One point we can absolutely agree on and is something that we have stressed since inception of our company is that parental monitoring is necessary at any volume, lower volume is always better, and shorter listening times are safer at any volume.

This is the same crap we got with the 3ds. "oh no it will kill kids eyes". Than get a 2ds or put some scotch tape over the 3d slider. I'm sick of the media making up problems to create a story.

Unlike the effects of 3D (whether there are or not is not for discussion in this thread), the damage of sound db and it's relation to hearing loss are well known and documented.

So not sure how this article is bullshit? Sure, you can argue that Parents are responsible for their children's safety but at the same time you need to be able to trust that whichever device designed for their use is safe.
