[Rumor] ZEN to be "soldered"

Westmere, Nehalem, and Sandy Bridge Xeons often came in two dies. You're not nearly as well informed as you believe.

A standard 10-core Xeon from Sandy Bridge coming in a 2-die package with 1 core disabled on each.

It's not like the die is PGA on top of the package substrate! The die is BGA on the package which is PGA on the socket.

Less talking, more showing picture of the Xeon in question.

With the screens you have a 290 is fine for a year more. Next year you can go upgrade both your CPU and GPU.

Also this looks pretty good, sadly they don't handle heat very well. 60c is not much....

Nah 4GB is already problematic. And maxing things out (not even the worst GameWorks crap), yields fps under 30 in some games. So need new GPU. However a curved ultrawide has priority. If only there was a useful monitor on the market.

That pic is clearly a intel pentium d cause during that time, intel don't have a real dual core, so they glue single core pentium 4s together and call it dual core.

The ihs says amd, well intel snatched it from, no time to make their own.

The IHS says AMD because the x86_64 extension is from AMD :)

Forgive me, 2830, but GFY. You know I'm right.

The 2830 is an E7, not an E5. But okay, that could just have been another typo. What's really telling, though, is that the 2830 is not even freaking Sandy Bridge at all. It's Westmere.

Perhaps it's the 16c/32t or (maybe) a 32c/64t server chip.

I would actually think that this is a bristol ridge part.  Die seems far too large otherwise.

It's likely either BR, a Zen server chip (16c/32t or a potential 32c/64t), or the chip is smaller than the photograph make it seems.

Or maybe AMD is compensating for a lil something something.

I really don't know.  Just seems large for a 14nn chip...

I'm even more confused after seeing this http://ocaholic.ch/modules/news/article.php?storyid=15776&lang=english

And it cannot be a 32c chip.  Amd already confirmed that those will be using an MCM, not one monolithic die.

It did say it was likely he got a BR chip, which I believe is the last revision of Excavator.

Are you out of your mind? E5 2840.

Every Intel, AMD, and Nvidia silicon die sits on top of the package be it a CPU, GPU, APU, etc.. CPU dies are BGA on top of their package substrates.

Yes, because they took the time to photoshop the AMD stamp on the IHS, the arrow on the PCB, and the shadow showing that the CPU is lifted up (pins vs contacts on the bottom). Clearly this was all a clever ruse by an AMD fan to make AMD look better than the mighty Intel, right? I love you Patrick, but you can't be doing that, come on.

Would the die actually be large enough to have the IHS soldered on? Because Intel only has the larger die CPU on the X99 socket with soldered on IHS, as the die on their low core count CPU would get damaged.

Well thing is,  intel's current 14nm quad cores are 122mm², and about half the die is dedicated to graphics.

Even with zen's SoC design,  i would still expect an 8 core die to be <200mm²,  which doesn't seem to be the case here.

That's because this isn't an AMD CPU. It's a photoshopped E5 2840 Xeon. I mean E5 2830. Wait, they didn't make E5 2830's, I meant E7 2830. I am an Intel expert with intimate knowledge from being a shareholder. Trust me on this.

Well, at least you're not saying it'll be $1 and twice as fast as Skylake.

I do like the idea of a soldered TIM... Let's see if it turns up true.

Don't CPUs get hotter than 60C rather easily though?  Certainly if overclocked I think?

So wouldn't using stuff that gets messed up at around 60C or above be a bad idea?
