PG278QR vs PG279Q which one should i get?

So the new 278QR now has the same Hz as the 279Q - Im planning on buying at Black friday and im wondering if i should dare the jump to 279Q as it is a IPS..

 

Thing is.. they have the same brightness rating so what is really the thing about the 279?

 

I sold the 278Q (the older model) with profit.. i just had to... as i had no reseipt either. But i was a bit dissapointed with the Brightness on it.. Thats the main reason i look at something else. The screen was perfect otherwise.

Where does it say it is 165Hz?

Just keeping this here as a The difference between them is that the 8 is a TN panel, the 9 is an IPS.

 

TN has less input lag (marginally) and is much cheaper, but you have to face very poor viewing angles and the colours are not shown very well - some areas of the screen will have different colours from others.  IPS screens are more expensive and have much better colour representation - the colours will be more uniform across the screen. It will have much better viewing angles and will generally look nicer.

I have had the ips version for almost 12 months and its great. I do notice some ghosting though in league very minor but a 1cm trail behind characters somtimes thefore if i was buying in the future I'd go for the tn panel. My backlight bleed is actualy pretty good hardly notice it so I wouldn't worry about that unless your very picky and always looking at a pitch black screen.

Either way, ROG series has always very low input lag in general. The PG279Q (3.25 ms) has even smaller input lag than the PG278Q (4.00 ms), so I suppose the updated PG278QR version will have even smaller input lag. But by how much over the PG279Q, that's what I'm wondering. Either way, it's going to be very, very negligible. They are all very low input lag to begin with and there's not much else they can do. So I'd guess less than 1 ms difference for sure.

That's response time, not input lag.

 

Plus it's an advertised response time, so don't forget to put your tinfoil hat on while reading those ;)

 

The real G2G average response time (+overshoot) at 144 Hz on PG279Q and PG278Q is like this:

I recommend to change the overdrive setting, the extreme setting overshoots like crazy - that's why you see the black ghosts. Going from extreme (gtg 4.0 ms, overshoot 40.0 %) to medium (gtg 5.2 ms, overshoot 0.4 %) will cost you only 1 ms in response time and there will be absolutely no noticeable overshoot ;)

 

It's very common to not go for the highest setting with overdrive, the highest one is often set up to overshoot here and there. It's not meant for the everyday use.

Do you mean the overdrive? I'm not sure how exactly it works. But in general, if an adjustment would take too much time, the pixel goes to a different state instead (like black or white) and then switches back to the wanted state. For example, instead of doing grey->greyer, it goes grey->black->greyer in overall faster time. But how it's adjusted, what methods they use to make it usable, etc, I have no idea in this regard.

Ok I don't actualy see black it's more just a trail of what ever colour it is. Mostly visible trailing behind player health bars with like greeny white. I'll try turning of OD when I'm home.

There's no need to turn the overdrive completely off, the medium works very well and the pixels are still very fast. It's just that the extreme setting is pushed quite a bit more than it's even usual. It seems they just wanted to hit the 4 ms response time no matter the consequences.

Source here and here. I'm just showing you what the real numbers and differences actually are... But this is the for the older PG278Q, not PG278QR, therefore this may be slightly different. I'd expect the input lag (not response time) with the PG278QR to be different in a positive way though.

oh sorry, I thought response time and input lag were the same thing.

Edit! YEah! i got it! 4990NOK  and 2000NOK saved! i only invested 800NOK for a new and better screen. + Warranty. :D

 

712$ total for everyone outside of Norway.

 

 I am a bit proud now.. Never "hunted" for a product like this or waited for a timing window for a product. But it paid off.

Most of those with 144Hz TN panel is identical hardware in same packaging it seems. Just make sure you get VESA, lift, tilt, rotate etc. and buy from a decent shop that are not dicks on returns on faulty Hardware. There could be features and some other electronic differences that might be nice but probably not a big deal. I would chase price once i got the spec i need nailed.

 

if you think 1080p looks ok even on 27" i would easily recommend a ultrawide.. so much stuff for the money. One of them is 160Hz VA panel. I think VA is the way to go in the future, supposedly not so bleached in colors as a TN and more darkness and consistency (less back glow etc.) than IPS. VA is the middle ground. with some added benefits.

Thing is.. they have the same brightness rating so what is really the thing about the 279?

 

I sold the 278Q (the older model) with profit.. i just had to... as i had no reseipt either. But i was a bit dissapointed with the Brightness on it.. Thats the main reason i look at something else. The screen was perfect otherwise.

PG279Q looked better overall to me

I first got newer versions TN 8QR

Cause I have sensitive eyes and TN I felt always better than the VA and softer with nice color

 

ASUS good quality on Monitors with my TN 2012 or 2013 to Oct 2019 I had on my ASUS VG248QE 144 1ms 1080p was was roughly 6 months before GSYNC so I had VSYNC on all games and wanted GSYNC ormaybe still on it if had GSYNC 

 

I never had IPS. So I gave the IPS 4ms PG279Q a shot with PG278QR side by side.

For me Ips has slightly better color representation better brightness contrast. And felt net and movies say crisper and better not buy much

 

Con TN darker at times have have desk with it even height of head to avoid this

Con IPS have to adjust black but had better control of fixing it in NVCP
