Love AOE2, not so much AOE3. IMO Neither have the quick pace that esports need, even SC2 multiplayer got a major game speed boost via mineral collection adjustments to appeal more to esports players and watchers.

Without official support from devs no. Not in larger scale at least. AoE2 has been a thing in past. It would take real effort from community and some energetic people to promote it as such.

That's like taking Civ to e-sports. nobody wants to watch a multi-hour game and call it competitive

AOE2 has been re-released with a HD version of better graphics. AOE3 is actually nice to play mainly to watch things fall apart piece by piece and the ship battles are better however the gameplay of both are very different from different population limits (AOE3 limits ships by a number + card rather than main population pool).

However for playing against others i would suggest AOE2, if playing co op i would suggest AOE3. Also AOE3 campaign is much nicer as it is much more focused rather than huge maps where you could end up spending too much time. Cheats in AOE2 is hilarious though.

If playing AOE3 against others i suggest limiting everyone to either new profiles or fully unlocked profiles. Level 1 profile vs one that has unlocked everything, you stand a lot less of a chance (fully unlocked ottoman can have double navy limit, 2 factories and produce really powerful cannons).

But AOEII HD IS an eSport - TheViper, Nicov, DauT, BacT, SilentSpring, Lierry, T90, ZeroEmpires, etc. have made that the case with huge prizes in tournaments so much so that it is a job for some players.  AOCZone talks all about it.

I think it doesn't impede AOE2:HD from being played, streamed and watched.. As @VPrime said, ZeroEmpires on Youtube is doing great work of streaming commenting and analizing games, among others.

I recently subd to him and enjoy watching it pretty much.

AOE2 has gotten more DLC and it has refreshed a bit, there was a tournament not to long ago, too.

I used to play it online (AoE 2) and games can really go by fast to be honest. Very are some pretty good players that can build an army of Paladins by the time you're half way through the castle age.
