AI can predict who will be criminals based on facial features

In a paper titled “Automated Inference on Criminality using Face Images,” two Shanghai Jiao Tong University researchers say they fed “facial images of 1,856 real persons” into computers and found “some discriminating structural features for predicting criminality, such as lip curvature, eye inner corner distance, and the so-called nose-mouth angle.” They conclude that “all four classifiers perform consistently well and produce evidence for the validity of automated face-induced inference on criminality, despite the historical controversy surrounding the topic.”

The study contains virtually no discussion of why there is a “historical controversy” over this kind of analysis — namely, that it was debunked hundreds of years ago. Rather, the authors trot out another discredited argument to support their main claims:, that computers can’t be racist, because they’re computers:

Unlike a human examiner/judge, a computer vision algorithm or classifier has absolutely no subjective baggages, having no emotions, no biases whatsoever due to past experience, race, religion, political doctrine, gender, age, etc., no mental fatigue, no preconditioning of a bad sleep or meal. The automated inference on criminality eliminates the variable of meta-accuracy (the competence of the human judge/examiner) all together. Besides the advantage of objectivity, sophisticated algorithms based on machine learning may discover very delicate and elusive nuances in facial characteristics and structures that correlate to innate personal traits and yet hide below the cognitive threshold of most untrained nonexperts.

This misses the fact that no computer or software is created in a vacuum. Software is designed by people, and people who set out to infer criminality from facial features are not free from inherent bias.

Well, if it's 100% accurate (never picks an innocent person as a criminal or vise versa) then this would be fantastic, but the obvious problem is when has anything ever been absolutely 100% correct, every time?  The potential for misuse seems all too obvious, but I highly doubt any government would be crazy enough to put this into practice using it to predict who might commit a crime and arresting them ahead of time... right? :S

Also, I have to say, I remember spending time learning about police work and stuff in elementary school, and one of the key points they attempted to drive home was exactly the opposite of this - that's you can't tell a criminal by their face (And they showed a bunch of bad looking people that turned out to be innocent and vise versa to prove it and all that).  Kinda funny :P

Google AI is also getting scary. If you use Google photos which is free. It will find faces and if you search objects like dog. All pictures with a dog in them will show up. What is even more crazy is if you search a face it will find all of the person's pictures of them now and when they were a baby!

I admit I din't read the source study. But judging from the news source, there's some pretty basic flaws in the claim made about it, or the idea that there's "controversy" around looks-based criminology.

The important point to stress is that all the software did is to find correlations between facial features and existing criminal records (so much for "A.I."). It can "predict" criminal behavior (not without error) the same way Google was able to predict the spread of influenza better than epidemiological models for a while, until it couldn't: the correlational information google was using had no causal basis, and once the spurious correlation between people searching for arbitrary terms and flu outbreaks vanished, the "big data" miracle died out.

So, while this study can show that exploiting correlations does better than flipping a coin (at least for some definition of crime), it adds nothing to the "controversial theories" of the past, as it can't provide any evidence of a causal link between determinants of facial features and some definition of criminal behavior (it's important to notice the difference between a particular behavior, such as killing someone, from "breaking a law", which involves different behaviors depending on the place and time we are looking at).

Moreover, "criminal behavior" is equal to "having a criminal record" here, but to have a criminal record you have to get caught. So, the correlations could come from police being more effective at catching people with certain features, rather than a higher incidence of criminal activity.

I don't remember the exact episode, but he has a sensor on his forehead that detects the lightness/darkness of someone's skin. When it focused on Troy, it asked if it should call the authorities.

I think people have enough problems with prejudice and misinformed fear and hatred for people who look different to them. A computer algorithm to encourage this nonsense is just going to exacerbate the issue.
