  • Leaked info about Intel Coffee Lake coming out in 2018.
  • Built on 14nm process
  • Will have entire line up, Coffee Lake - S, -H, -U, and -X.
  • Enthusiast class, Coffee Lake-X has a 6+2 configuration, with GT2 igpu, and has size of 149mm squared.
  • Mainstream class, Coffee Lake-S has 2 configurations, 4+2 and 6+2
  • 4+2 is quad core and 6+2 is a hexa core.
  • Both will feature GT2 igpu
  • The 4+2 has die size of 126mm squared and the 6+2 has the same die size as Coffee Lake-X at 149mm squared.
  • Coffee Lake-H will also have a 6+2 configuration for the mobile platform.
  • Coffee Lake-U for ultra mobile, has a 4+2 configuration, and 128mb of eDRAM. 
  • Intel Cannon Lake PCH, Intel 300 series chipset
  • Native support for DDR4 2400
  • Supports Hdmi 2.0, dp 1.2, & hdcp 2.2
  • Speculation there might be a increase in pcie lanes

It may just not be suitable for high-power applications (yet). Remember the TSMC 20nm planar failure? It never became viable for GPUs, so we got stuck on 28nm for a long time. Intel is bringing 10nm to mobile first, but Coffee Lake is the same architecture as Cannonlake, just up on 14nm. I don't think we know enough yet.

Did the E series processors just get renamed to X with more options? The chart really doesn't make sense to me, it's odd they launch two at the same time with the older name having more cores, cache etc. Also for Skylake-X why the drop in L3 cache? I'm assuming all these lines are still for heavy CPU users and don't make any sense for gaming for the most part.

 

For the desktop processors do you guys believe the new 6 core Coffee Lake processor would come at an extra premium over the 4 cores? Or would you imagine the 6 core i7 for example would replace the 4 core at the same price point? Kind of want to upgrade from Sandy Bridge but wouldn't mind waiting for the 6 core option the following year. However, if the 6 core is going to be way over ~330 I may not get it anyway.

Also kind of speculating but would the socket likely remain the same from Kaby Lake to Coffee Lake? It's all based off the Skylake architecture, no?

The drop in L3 cache is a rumor, but no one's bothered to address it. Intel has no reason to cut back from its 2.5MB of L3 per core formula.

 

Coffee Lake is the Cannonlake architecture scaled up to 14nm, but it should still use the 1151 socket.

Cannonlake is a new architecture, but it's not built from the ground-up like Ice Lake will be. It's not just a shrink of Skylake. There are tweaks and improvements not related to the shrink, and those will show up with Coffee Lake as well.

Given Kaby Lake will have support on Z170, some vendors will also put Cannon and Coffee support in too. It IS the same LGA 1151 socket.

Yeah, ASRock has been quite kind with BIOSes lately

IIRC it was the first to give OCing even on non Z 1xx chipsets (and 9x too)

That could be argued in many ways... what mainstream software is there to make use of it? Look at AMD... hasn't helped them. While not mainstream, the cost to a 5820k isn't much more than a high end quad. When building my main system, I could have got a budget 5820k/X99 system instead of the midrange 6700k/Z170 I went for.

 

My personally interest is simply I want the most FMA compute power possible as cheaply as possible. Right now, that is Intel's domain, and I hope they hurry up with AVX512.

That's not the point, "the mainstream" doesn't even take advantage of the high end quad cores properly. It just doesn't make sense to still have to shell out 300 bucks for those quad cores and have to buy a more expensive motherboard to access the hexas.
