Main News Topics

New Macbook Pro outsold every competing laptop in just 5 days

Source 1: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/689587-new-macbook… OP: hey_yo_

Source 2: https://9to5mac.com/2016/11/09/2016-macbook-pro-sales/

  • Had already outsold combined sales of the Dell XPS 13 and 15 by November 9

  • Almost four times as many units as Microsoft’s Surface Book

  • Again, in just 5 days, Macbook pro models reached almost 80% of the sales total of the 2015 and 2016 Macbook sales combined

  • Interesting note is that 40% of those who bought the last Pro model in 2014 had already purchased a second machine for themselves or as a gift for family/friends

  • Sales are not the only metric that matters though…. (see next topic)

Touchbar Macbook Pro reviews are coming in… and it doesn’t look good

Source 1: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/691253-touchbar-macbook-... OP: djdwosk97

Source 2: https://9to5mac.com/2016/11/15/2016-macbook-pro-...

  • SSDs and RAM are both soldered to the logic board

  • Battery cells “look comically small”

    • Some speculating that Apple limited their size to hit a weight target

    • Others say that this could be an intentional choice “to give the batteries room to expand, or limit heat build-up inside the otherwise tightly-packed casing” (perhaps avoiding a Note 7-style issue? :P)

  • Reviewers stating that they are seeing nowhere near Apple’s claimed 10-hour battery life

    • The Verge reported 5-6 hours of life, while Business Insider reported 8 hours under ideal conditions, 6 hours under normal use

    • “That’s a shame because Apple historically advertised battery times that were much more aligned with real usage, even chastising other companies for exaggerating their claims.”

  • This news comes after Apple’s claims that the lack of a 32GB option was due to a focus on power savings

  • General performance, trackpad, keyboard, and Touchbar are all considered positives, as is expected

Talk about the 16gb thing

More gamers are playing on Radeon graphics than Intel and Nvidia combined

Source 1: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/691876-more-gamers-are… OP: Liltrekkie

Source 2: http://gfxspeak.com/2016/11/16/balance-power-gaming/?sf42624682=1

  • Holy clickbait - this swtat includes console gaming and is convoluted as f***

  • A highlight graph that shows just ho impossible it is to make sense of their point:

    • dR7BQt2HK_Quf9z0Dh_vqehas1H5gNPYjNBVJGWU

  • “The major take away is when x86-based gaming is examined, AMD is the clear winner”

  • “[x86-based] machines fall into three platforms, consoles, notebooks, and desktops.”

  • When tracking equipment, they considered the installed base of the “latest consoles” including Microsoft Xbox-One, Nintendo Wii and Wii U (not sure if they think these are two in the same?...), and Sony PS4, as well as the installed base of add-in boards used for gaming acquired over the past 3 years, and the installed base of integrated graphics in notebooks from both AMD and Intel

  • A highlight paragraph of just how difficult it is to track their logic:

    • Based on Steam user data, we conclude that 16.5% of desktop machines used for gaming are using Intel integrated graphics (Southeast Asia represents about 6.5 percent of Valve’s global Steam gamers). Steam data does not differentiate desktop from notebook integrated graphics. Therefore, we applied the same percentage to Intel for notebooks and based on the AMD to Intel integrated notebook ratio (our quarterly data collection of mobile integrated GPU shipments), normalized AMD’s notebook integrated gamer utilization.

  • PC Data

    • For the past seven years, three major vendors installed base of GPUs for PC gaming declined slowly following the PC’s decline

    • GRAPH

  • With the GPU gaming hardware marketing being $30 billion dollars in 2016, growing to $33+ billion in 2019, the market opportunity is large

  • Gaming hardware market value in 2016 GRAPH

GFXSPEAK’S FINAL THOUGHTS

  • Intel is the volume leader in integrated GPUs in PC, NVIDIA leader in discrete GPUs in PC

  • When they look at x86 console and PC market as a whole, the numbers tell an interesting story

  • More gamers are playing on Radeon graphics than Intel and NVIDIA combined

Source 2: http://www.kotaku.co.uk/2016/11/15/dont-share-watch-dogs-2s-vaginas

    • Something that slipped through certification

  • Kotaku reports that if you take a picture and share it to prove this on PlayStation, Sony will temporarily ban your account

  • Over on NeoGAF user Goron2000 tells how he discovered this

    • “I received my copy of Watch Dogs 2 on Saturday evening due to a mistake on Amazon Prime Now and I’ve been having a great time with the game so far. On Sunday evening I accidently blew up a few women in a back alley with a gas pipe and then I saw *it*, someone at Ubisoft had rendered a full vagina on one (or maybe more) of the females in the game”

    • He shared a screenshot of this, and had his PlayStation account banned from using the game’s online features

      • Due to the image breaking Sony’s code of conduct

@LinusTech. In the show you talk about PCB space concerns but unless they are using a revised package DDR4 packages typically are twice the density of DDR4 so twice the capacity takes up the same space.
