Well, my friend wants a intel core 2 quad ( http://ark.intel.com/products/39107/Intel-Core2-Quad-Processor-Q8300-4M-Cache-2_50-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB ) and this cpu has a 1333 MHz FSB. The motherboard says "Supports 1066/800/533MHz FSB" and 1333MHz exceedes the 1066 MHz. Does the motherboard also supports 1333 MHz ? Does it effects it's performance ? Is going to kill it ? I dont know. I never gave it much thought in the past but I want to be sure for now.

I think you misunderstood my question, I asked what you want to DO with it? as in build a fileserver? gaming machine? etc?

Because the best CPU for a NAS for instance wouldn't necessarily be the same one that we would say is best for gaming, capiche?

Well to be perfectly frank, for gaming he'd be better off with a more recent AMD system than that... that is supposing he doesn't already have the mobo of course. You should be able to pick up something like an AMD phenom II 1055t with the mobo for about £100 or so maybe, haven't looked lately but I know I wouldn't get much more than that if I sold mine, I bought it in like 2009/early 2010 maybe - still nice chips though and perfectly fine for gaming on at a budget.

Sorry, I meant the quad would probably be fine, but you might be able to pick up a more recent AMD system cheaper... it's worth looking around anyway rather than settling on something.

This system is as follows : Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor L7500 , Motherboard Gigabyte GA-VM900M , 2 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD. And he was 25 $ for an upgrade...So yea...

Ah I see.. in that case yeah the upgrade path is clearly the quad. Wasn't trying to be patronising or anything, just without much info it was unclear whether this was an upgrade system ask, or buying older systems kinda thing.

 

I was shifting a lot of unused stuff about a year ago now that had stacked up in the loft/garage etc and ended up throwing away a complete core2duo system, think it was an e6850... I have since found that I could ahve used it for another NAS or whatever, but oh well... it had sat unused for about 7 years maybe.

So, as I was saying. Does the FSB matters when I by a new CPU ? This question is still in my mind. Got to use those 25 $ with care. We dont get that every day here.

Hmm, don't know for sure as it's been a while, but can't imagine they would be that intolerant as to not operate at a lower FSB speed.. i'm fairly sure it's an "upto" figure... from memory I think it would just lower the actual operating frequency of the CPU, so would be lower by about a 3rd or so.

oh sorry, just remembered that that is supposing that the motherboard has a bios that would let it operate at a lower FSB of course.

You'll have to actually research that i'm sorry to say, i have no actual knowledge of that mobo, so you'll have to do a bit of digging to see what bios updates did etc.

With the core 2 series I would have to say no. I have the e8600 and it wont work with anything less then its rated 1333mhz fsb. Its mostly due to the bios of the boards though. Things werent as nice back then as they are now and many boards even though they say core 2 duo/quad will only support the older series of core 2/quads ie e7000 series duo and e6600 quad. Also being that it only supports 667 mhz DDR2 and not the faster 800MHz type that's another clue as well although some manufacturers have done that. Make sure to research the chipset on the board for more info just in case though.

Since the board maxes out at 1066 anything more will be an overclock which isnt always possible or stable.

 

Since your friend wants a quad the best 1066mhz quad core is the Q6600 and it is easily available and cheap. or he could go with a harder to find QX6700.

 

That motherboard will need the latest BIOS update applied in order to support the quad cores so make sure that is done with the current core 2 cpu in place first.

It won't post with a 1333 MHz FSB installed. Core 2 Extreme X6800 is probably about the best that board can do.
