Is 144Hz really worth it?

  1. 1. 144hz or 21:9

    • 144Hz + 970 (huge sacrifices must be made)

But it would be a severe pain. For me, because I am a minor and don't have a job, $180 for another 970 is quite a bit of money. For $180 I could get Forza Horizon 3, Corsair Void Wireless to replace my Kraken Pros that really need to go, a Xbox One Controller to replace my outdated and bad xbox 360 controller, and a few other cool trinkets if I get a good deals. So it is REALLY worth it?

Just so know 29" UW = 23" 16:9 as far as height goes. So the UltraWide is the bigger monitor here.

I would say yes, but then another question comes along, is SLI worth it. As far as I can tell going ultrawide would need to push more power too, especially to keep at 60fps.
Personally I would focus on getting a single capable gpu like a 1070 (not sure how well a 1060 would do) or an AMD variant and then chooses between the two monitors.
But if I had the gpu to do so, I would go 144hz every single time.

I have done tests, I can handle Ultra Wide. In SWBF the 1070 gets about 120-130 FPS, while the 970 SLI gets 145-150FPS.

We are talking about one game here, and whilst battlefront is a great game imo, it's not going to last forever. There will be other games that come along that you are interested in and want to play but may not scale well with sli.
From what I can gather, a 980 isn't much better than a 970, and my 980 managed well in every game I threw at it, it obviously wasn't hitting 144fps in every game, bu it was still a lot higher than 60. So I would imagine you would be fine if we're talking 1080p 144hz..

Honestly though It comes down to what you want from a monitor.
Do you want much smoother gameplay, less motion blur and a more responsive mouse input?
Do you want a wider field of view and more screen real estate?
I've already gave you my opinion, but I won't be the one to tell you to go out of pocket etc.

I'll will probably just have to try one out. If I can't get 970 SLI , i wont do it. It would be too much of a pain. And I just couldn't afford it. Because I'd have to get a 1080 I guess.

I think that's a good decision.
Try one out at a computer shop.
Flick back and forth between 60 and 144hz. Try ultrawide out too.
There's no doubt about it though, you won't be disappointed with either of them.

If they think they're getting a sale out of it they might. Who doesn't like money.
Over here I have Currys/PCworld, not sure what shops would allow it in the US.

Only thing I can think of then is to buy and return if not satisfied.
Check store policy obviously though.

As stupid as it sounds, I love 144hz as much just generally using the computer as I do gaming, running dual 27" with one being 60hz and one being 144hz and it feels so much better moving windows around on the 144hz, Its kinda mind blowing honestly, dragging a window across over to the 60hz makes it look like one of those digital picture frames flipping thru pictures...

I had a 29" Ultrawide a year or so ago, my wife and I both hated it. I gave it an honest good try for two weeks, just couldn't take it anymore, and it went back to the store. A lot of the issues like webpages not formatting even close to correctly and a lot of video sites (CBS was TERRIBLE) barely functioning are pry fixed by now, but it still felt really really short. Going back to a 24" 16:9 still felt like there was a ton more screen space when really there was less.

After using both, I'd go 144hz hands down no questions asked. I think your best bet would be to try and sell your current 970 and just get a single 1060, but you'll want to crunch the numbers for that.

I forgot to mention that I have a 60" 1080P 120hz (or so they say) TV. You think that is worth trying out? I don't think I can get a gaming experience at 60" tho. (36PPI)

Its pretty unlikely it will take a 120hz input, its probably just the interpolation 120hz where the TV simulates frames between real frames to make it feel like a higher refresh rate.

It won't really be 120hz. Before I got into PC gaming I got a 500"hz" plasma tv. Once I got into PC gaming though I realized I had kinda been conned really.
TV only really goes to 60.

If you're not doing anything productivity wise then there really is no reason to go 21:9. I also don't see why you think a 970 can handle 1080p 144hz, it can rofl. My old 960 shredded through CSGO and Overwatch easily. While you may not be playing those games, SWBF isn't THAT demanding and you should still see higher frame rates, much higher than 60. No reason to limit your gaming experience for a lager monitor. Also the VOID Wireless are dogshit. Get something 10x better for cheaper like the hyper X cloud 2s. Or buy a pair of Phillips SHP9500s + Vmoda Boom Pro for the same price as the VOID.

For me personally, no. If buying a monitor for gaming, I'd want a monitor with the lowest input lag possible as I play a lot of fighting games.

21:9 @1080p feels really constrained. I initially got a 29" one before jumping the gun on a 34" one at 1440p. The 1440p model feels lightyears better in terms of size and resolution.

Sli is never really worth it. That being said going with a single 970 for 144hz is a bad idea especially at resolutions above 1080p.

970 SLI is slower than a single GTX 1070. And not even a GTX 1080 will push 144 FPS at 1080p in modern graphically-intensive games, when all the settings are turned up. In Forza 3 and Battlefront, though, it probably could, because those games aren't too demanding.
