GTX 1070 Vs 1080

Hello, I am wondering what the major difference between these ti graphics cards are. (Besides the price). I am thinking about getting a GTX 1070, but didn't know if the 1080 is any better. (The 1070 is cheaper so I was going to go with that).

The fact that the GTX 1080 is significantly better in performance? The GTX 1070 does hold a better price/performance ratio though. Most of the time, you'll be fine with the GTX 1070.

Well you would expect the 1080 with a larger number and higher price to perform better, right?

Go look at some benchmarks of the 1070vs1080 and decide if it's worth over 150% the cost of a 1070.

I'm still using saphhire r9 390 nitro with my 1080p monitor

and I can max every game at ultra with 60 fps

 

so I think you will be fine with the 1070 card

as long as you are NOT on 4k .

GTX 1080 would be insanely overkill for 1080p and you would held back by your CPU.

I advice you to take a look into the GTX 1060 / RX 480.

Aligning your GPU selection to your resolution is a useful tool, albeit somewhat reductionist. Ultimately, it comes down to your specific use case. For example, I picked up a GTX 1080 for 1440p  because I planned on modding Skyrim (still can't get solid 60FPS everywhere, but I'm not exactly trying to be resource efficient and optimise where possible tbh). Granted, the majority of games aren't resource heavy or inefficient as modded Skyrim so your mileage may vary. Having some overhead with your games is always nice though; maybe you want to try a reshade or re-texture mod that would cause lower GPUs to stumble a bit.

 

Frankly, I agree with Aytex, if you can do so - do so. I don't regret picking up the 1080 one bit, even though it took a while longer to obtain. Otherwise, the GTX 1070 is a phenomenal card with great performance and an even better pricetag.

1070 is best used for 144hz/1080p or 60fps 1440p. It would also be great at 2560x1080(1080p ultrawide) but Im not a fan really of this rez. It could also be used for 3440x1440(1440p ultrawide) but you would have to tone down some games to hit 60fps. 

 

1080-Is best used for anything 1440p or over. Its sweet spot would be 1440p/144hz or 3440x1440. It also can do 4k gaming but still cant quite get 60fps on all games but would do very nicely.

I currently have the Gigabyte GTX 970. I might be buying a new 1080p/144hz monitor while it would be cheaper around this time. It would be for solid performance and future proofing.

Well the GTX 970 is a solid 1080p card still, despite the controversy over its memory. So since you already have a good card still I would not recommend a GTX 1060. It would not really be a noticeable difference in Performance and if you did want to go 1080p/144hz it would not get you there. So I think for you a GTX 1070 would be perfect alongside a 1080p/144hz monitor.

Don't upgrade unless your planning on playing at 1440p... the 1070 is awesome I have it and it is a beast at 1440p. At 1080p it's overkill and your not really using it to its fullest. Sell your 970 and get a 1440p monitor and then get a 1070.
