In a statement to The Verge, YouTube said it’s happy with the growth of Red, and is fully invested in the service. “We’re pleased with momentum behind YouTube Red and we’re seeing healthy growth of members each month,” a YouTube spokesperson said. “While we don't release or comment on speculative numbers, we’re seeing strong engagement of the service in the four countries we’ve launched, leading us to invest in more originals series and movies for 2017 and increased marketing of YouTube Music.”

By the end of 2016, YouTube will have released 20 Red Original series and movies, four of which have already been renewed. Going forward, it plans to add shows from Lionsgate and a pair of series produced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman.

Obviously Red is only available in a limited market and requires more time to be available worldwide but I assure that Google is not happy with mere million or two million payers. That generates under 200 million of revenue which is peanuts to Google. 

Seems that YouTube needs to be investing a lot more (in exclusive content) to get the type of traction it needs to compete against the likes of Netflix which is closing in on 100 million subscribers.

So Youtube cant get people to pay for youtube. Not surprising, at all. Ive not seen anything compelling about youtube red, or even really advertised at all. I see the program getting scrapped or restructured into a different venture.

I have no idea what Youtube Red is and have never heard of it outside of LTT. It probably is a US-only thing, like most things. About to verify this myself.

 

Edit: Was partially right - only available in Australia, Mexico, New Zealand, and the United States. No wonder, I use Youtube every day and have zero idea what Youtube Red is.

I only have YouTube red because I have a google music subscription, I do not use YouTube red at all.

YouTube Red will get my money when it's 5 bucks a month and not bundled with anything else. I'd never use Google Play music, and asking 10 bucks a month just for no ads and exclusive content is stupid. Especially when we're all just using adblock anyways.

You must use it to not get advertisements on YouTube unless you don't watch YouTube

I don't either but before YouTube red released I white listed YouTube on AdBlock so I was getting ads but YouTube red removed them

I've been downloading youtube for a year or so to get around the ads.

I mean, smaller websites would probably lose people because they'd go elsewhere, but the bigger ones would benefit hugely from this.

if they rolled it out to europe i would gladly pay for it, i hate ads and use an adblocker now and buy merch of my fav youtubers to support them. if they gave me youtube red i would literally buy it instantly.

I like youtube red, I use it to background play the wan show and tech talk. only downside is it kills my battery. The music service is awesome too.
