Vessel acquired and shut down by Verizon

ExplodingTNT

I had a year free on Vessel (the promotion) and I grew to like it so I paid when my "free time" expired. Used it only for tech videos (LinusTech, HardwareCanucks, TechteamGB, EposVox, TechSource and a few others) since it did offer me the ability to diversify the content I watched on different platforms. Now, if they refund me for the remaining time, I might be able to get a game or something... but it will feel strange, like something was missing, for a few weeks. R.I.P Vessel.

The comment section you may have a point on although it's not great either, I just straight up disagree with the rest of your points, but I mean it doesn't matter I guess, there wont be a vessel to argue over in like 5 days. Also, isn't 5 days cutting it pretty fucking close to announce the entire website is just going away LMAO.

Yeah, that would be my guess too given the volume of likes / comments on Vessel. Views per video is probably somewhere in the low thousands perhaps around the 5k mark (on a good day).

Which is not insignificant, I think I just misjudged what you meant by a "ton of their income". If you look over on LTT's twitter, there is a nice reply from Nick, that says they aren't that concerned as their revenue is extremely diversified.

By "a ton" I mean almost as much as youtube.

Almost as much as adsense. Remember they bake in adverts on YouTube too.

But it's probably significantly less than adsense, If we assume that the pie chart in that video is somewhat to scale, then it's around half. There's no doubt that Vessel viewers on an individual basis pay out significantly more than YouTube though.

I would be fine to be a LMG patreon as long as I get 7 day exclusives like that of Vessel before YouTube. The thing is Google is actually having a hard time growing the YouTube Red subscribers. If Linus can get his videos to Netflix, I will definitely renew my subscription plus I get movies and TV shows.

How I wish Netflix host LMG's videos for a 7 day exclusivity, it's a win win for both. Unlike YouTube Red, Netflix is now worldwide.

i just seen that Verizon acquired vessel. i use vessel for all of Linus's channels. Do you think we can convince him to make his own early release site for paid subscribers? i really like getting to see videos earlier than youtube.

I just got the email about this and instantly thought of what this means for LTT. I guess we'll be going back to YouTube only which is fine I guess, very curious to see how they will talk about this on WAN this week

I would be fine with this, I only used Vessel during the one free month that was offered. After that I went a week without watching Linus Tech Tip videos and now I just watch them on Youtube. Wonder what they are going to do about their week of buffered content when Vessel goes offline

I think that it is unlikely that Netflix would host LinusTechTips videos, although that would be cool

Couldn't agree more. While I hope this doesn't hurt LinusTechTips that much in the pocket I am glad that Vessel is going away. Especially with the get videos a week early nonsense

Yeah, I just realized that Netflix requires some sort of contract and some other complicated paperwork. I know that Spotify is now doing video and podcasts but I don't know if they pay high royalties to creators.

Verizon has announced that they will be buying video startup Vessel (used by LTT, among other popular channels) and shutting it down.

I'm wondering what they are getting out of the deal. It seems to me like that's pretty wasteful:

"I know!!! Let's spend a few hundred million dollars buying this company!!"... "OK!!!! That sounds GREAT!!! We can then shut it down for no apparent reason!!!"

ENCRYPTION IS NOT A CRIME

It would be bad if Verizon finds someway of keeping any Vessel contracts valid and transfer them to go90

Sucks to see this happening.

However, no android app for a long time is what made Vessel more or less dead on arrival for me. When LMG launched there, the place where I watched most of my LMG content was on my android phone

For me Vessel was a good way to support LMG as those were only channels I watched on there.
I am happy that Youtube Red is not in Canada as it probably will take years to come to Estonia so I would be cut off from using that anyway.

I really hope LMG will respond and maybe make a statement what will happen next.

Maybe good for Vesseel founders in terms of money but terrible for the community since Verizon is most likely working on their own version which nobody will be interested in :D

To solve this LMG can start Youtube red since that wasnt an option when Vessel launched or try Patrion (sry for spelling I never seen the website just heard about it) or vimeo...
