Optiplex 990 upgrade or just build new?

Hi all,

I have a optiplex 990 from 2010. It has a 500gb 7200 rpm HDD, 8gb RAM, an i5 vpro quad core at around 3 ghz, and a crappy psu. Should I put this in a new S340 case with a better psu and a graphics card, or should I buy new entirely?

If I did buy a new one, here is a pcpartpicker list:

Would there be any major differences? Any recommendations for the gpu for an upgraded system?

Thanks!

I'd start out with just upgrading the GPU and PSU, and then only upgrade the CPU if you decide it's necessary.

As for your proposed build, get the 6gb 1060, don't get a Z170 board for a locked CPU, literally any cheap LGA1151 board is fine, and skip the fans.

I might go the upgrade route, as I'm just looking for gaming performance and web browsing. I can get money for the completely new build, but I don't care about playing at super high resolution so the upgrade should be more than sufficient.

Thanks for the suggestions?

The first question you should ask is do you have the money for it? If you are on a tight budget then yeah, i'd say reuse the parts from your dell but if you have money to spend, it might be about time to upgrade anyway.

The 3gb 1060 is also slower and not worth the slightly lower cost.

Dude.... don't get a CPU cooler or Z170 MoBo and use the extra ~50 bucks for a 6500

The 6500 isn't worth spending more than like $5 extra. The 6400 boosts to 3.1ghz on all four cores and 3.3ghz on two cores, while the 6500 boosts to 3.3ghz on all four cores and 3.5ghz on two cores.

It's  actually twenty bucks extra, and pretty much worth it on a chip that doesn't OC

Yes, and that's why it's usually not worthwhile. And no, it's still not worthwhile. $20 for a few extra percent that won't make much of a difference in terms of noticeable performance -- that $20 would be much better spent towards a better GPU/SSD/etc...

Thanks for the suggestion. I went with a cooler to fit the white theme of the build, and just selected an atx mobo.

I would probably go with a 6400 and a SSD. For gaming, the 6500 won't make a noticeable difference for an extra $20, while an SSD would drastically reduce load times.
