Can Too Much Head Pressure/Flow Damage Something?

Hey guys, I'm just gonna throw this question out here since I couldn't find any posts answering this.

Right now I'm dealing with a very dirty alphacool UT60 radiator that's been slowly clogging my filters by reducing flow by 0.01GPM/day in my already very restrictive loop. My plan is to buy a cheap fish tank pump and flush it out 24/7 while I'm at school, hoping it'll be clean in a few more days.

 

Long story short, I faced many options for pumps that were significantly different from the specs of D5's, and I was wondering if they would damage anything. Two examples below:

- Pump 1: 5000L/h (~32GPM), 3.8 meters head pressure (D5 spec)

- Pump 2: 1500L/h (D5 spec), 1.8 meters head pressure

 

Pump 1 has significantly more flow than a D5 (possibly too much), while working at a D5's head pressure, and Pump 2 has the same (max) flow as a D5, but significantly less head pressure.

 

Now there are a bunch of options in between them, but those were the two ends of the spectrum that matched a D5 vario.

 

Any advice/thoughts? Thanks

 

PS: I did try the Radiator Dance and Shake method, but to no avail, it just keeps on slowly depositing gunk and little chips of metal and paint into the loop. I'm also thinking about adding a tiny bit of vinegar to the water I will be sending through the loop.

That shouldn't be a problem at all, you can also lower your D5 pump speed if you have the PWM or vario version so it works very quietly. What pumps are you looking at specifically since the standard D5 should be able to push 1500L/h at a max head pressure of ~3.8m.

 

For cleaning the rads keep flushing them until you can't get any gunk out of them a good way is to attach the rads to the tap at low pressure and flush it out in both directions.

I have run This pump in my system for years and the head pressure on this was fine for all my Blocks and fittings.

I would actually recommend you get a higher pressure pump if your plan is to flush any gunk out of the radiator.

Ok so i've flushed this rad for about 72 hours in both directions (3 days each direction), and I've put it back in the loop, but my filters are still turning up dirty within 1 day, this RAD is the dirtiest I've ever seen, and I don't know what to do next.... (Alphacool NexXxos UT60 480mm, non-X-flow)

What all did you flush with? Id just replace it at that point. Assuming the rest of the loop is salvageable too.

My alphacool ut60's were filthy when I got them new. I used mayhem's blitz on them after rinsing them and I was amazed at how much came out. At least a full layer of black sediment in the bottom of a bowl. Invest in some blitz and treat any rads you get in the future, it's worth it!

 

Edit: blitz comes in 2 parts. Part 1 is for the rads only and part 2 is used on the entire loop. I think you'd benefit more from part 1 but buying both isn't a bad idea

I used water (purified, but not distilled or deionized) with a tiny bit of white vinegar to get rid of any possible oxidation. The pump was a fish tank fountain pump and was incredibly powerful — If the tube had come loose, water would've gone 3 meters up onto the ceiling.

Edit: A quick conversion and estimation gives around 8.5GPM.

 

I've checked the entire loop, it's all very clean thanks to the filter. However, the radiator is still crapping into the filters, and could be affecting flow a bit, however the modded Titan coolers seem to be a far greater cause of restriction from the kinking over time thats happening. During the next maintenance refill (which happens in about 5 months), I'll be taking the bottom card apart and lengthening the anti-kink coil a bit because it seems to be kinking where the coil ends from a bend I did not account for.

Me too! after the intense rinsing, there was a lot of black stuff on the bottom of the tank i put the pump in.
