Worst Part of your Case?

Vica

Hey

I am student beginning a design and technology project which i will be working on over the next year. I have decided to design and create a computer case and would appreciate it if you could write a comment on what your least favourite part of your pc case is and what case it is.

Any help would be much appreciated.

The fact my case does not have a PSU basement, It makes cable management that much harder and overall makes the build look sloppy.

So I made a custom one:P

Also not having VELCRO tie down points for cables. Man its a pain in the ass to use zip ties and when you have to change a component you have to cut up the entire cable management run to get at what you need.

Also I hate cases that don't have flat'ish tops, Often there are things needed to be put on a case (like and external HHD, or phone connected to charge or connect) and having a un even surface often means things slipping behind the rig never to been seen again.

Mine is a silent base 800...

The most annoying thing is that my hdd has the exact frequency of vibration that both of my sidepanels vibrate too and make a reasonable loud humming noise.

NZXT lexa s

I'm not going to list small things, but 3 major are:

- No PSU base

- Too little space behind motherboard

- No hole at the top left corner for CPU power cable management

Maybe a front mounted radiator space would be nice to have.

Enermax Chakra. Absolutely no room behind the motherboard tray. I cant even get a spare sata power cable behind there. EDIT: I Also hate the top mounted psu. makes cable management a massive pain.

drive mounts and cable space is complete shit but i also own a steel box that hapens to have pc mounting points lol

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Interesting thread!

The tempered glass window on my Mastercase 5 Pro. Its beautiful on the case, but so dark you can't see sh*t unless you have 20 LED strips running.

I've got a Corsair 400D. Dear God, it needed to come with more dust filters... (only came with two, one for the front intake fans and one for the bottom if you install your power supply to pull air from underneath the case).

I literally installed the PSU to pull air from inside the case (instead of from under the case) just so I could take the dust filter off of the bottom and mount it to the side panel with a fan and fan screws to hold the filter in place. It still pulls some air through the top (which is basically open for dust to have 240mm top exhaust support) since I use an h70 (120mm radiator) to push air out the back of the case... I guess it still has negative pressure. Removable dust filters on every open portion of the case is a must.

On the NZXT S340 the HDD cages seem to no have antivibration pads, which causes the front panel to hum and resonate.

Can't pick one thing because there's a whole bunch of annoyances.

Phantom 410:

No filters except in the front, which is garbage regardless.

Plastic trim in the front requires screws to prevent vibrations which I had to take off the front door so that's now more flexible.

Front fan screw holes are very flimsy, you have to hold it from the back to screw them in otherwise the metal flexes too much.

CPU cutout is way too small.

Grommets are cheap crap and the holes aren't in very cable friendly places, may be a motherboard thing though.

Wire holes along the top of the motherboard are too small to fit cables through easily.

Top has space for two 140mm fans but no cutout so you can put a radiator there. Massive oversight.

Behind the motherboard is not enough space for cable management, 1/4" would make a big difference.

Only thing I can think of for the h440 is that the  right side panel is a real pain in the dick to get on cause of the foam. wish it had like 3mm more clearance on that side.

Put an rubber anti-shock case on it.

well guess what... the hdd sits on a silicon rail... fixed the problem on another way: put some foam between sidepanel and motherboard tray so it dampens the vibrations. not 100% perfect, but it works quite well.

Maybe I'll switch to a big ssd and put all the stuff I use regularly on it and then let the hdd be my data grave that only needs to spin up when i need sth from my archive.

Caselabs Mercury S8 with pedestal.  No built-in air filters.  If you want them, you have to go with aftermarket filter options.  Other than than HUGE detail, they are perfect cases.

Really? Thats not a problem for me on 350d.

One suggestion that would be great for cases to have:

a slim optical drive bay, and make sure it mounts flush to the case. Stuff like the 5.25 bays on the 350d trigger me. It would be so simple to have a slim drive...

basically, obsidian layout and drive cages are a how not to build cases. Id say the NZXT Mantis has the best internal layout, imo.

Aerocool Aero-1000: nothing imoprtant, Minor issues:

- I would appreciate a little bit of extra clearance at the top for radiator mounting.

- Full-length 5.25'' bays make it harder to manipulate short front panels and their cabling (I guess it would be easier with the Aero-800 type of bays)

CoolerMaster HAF XB:

- The bottom floor is hard to access and work at without removing the motherboard tray, which requires fully unplugging everything, removing the GPU, etc. If it would just slide out the rear of the case for quick access to the bottom chamber it would be great.

- I would prefer the PSU to be somewhere other than right beneath the CPU. The obvious alternative would be to put it below the PCI slot area, but I think there's room for many design ideas in that case.

the worse parts are:

my case has too many fan positions and my OCD caused me to fill them with unnecessary fans

the fan on the rear is not behind any acoustic dampening.

FYI i have experimented with ducting in the past to get fresh air straight to the heat sources, and to keep fans away from the edge of the case; the result was ok but not worth the effort.

If i were to design a case from scratch i would use water cooling with rigid copper tubing, to shrink all the components into the smallest volume i could while keeping it cool and quiet. Then I would use a clear plastic box to show off the copper work

The side screws for the 3.5" HDD tray(s) in the basement aren't easy to access because they're.. well... on the sides.

I have no other complaints.
