Laptop for mostly online session

So my dad want a laptop for his online English course, here are some criteria:

1. Lightweight, portable (right now he's using my GE62, I don't want to imagine someone using a gaming laptop to learn online)

2. No more than $800 (can flex to $900 if possible and suitable)

3. 15.6 inch screen or lower

4. Has an SSD, does not have to include HDD

5. Reliable brand and warranty

6. Metal build (so no plastic)

I was thinking about HP or Dell but if anyone can find a good one please reply, thanks

If you want i can recommend a laptop less than 600$ but jam packed with performance, with 256gb ssd i5 6200u up to 2.8 ghz and nvidia gt 960mx

more than what you need and you can call it a gaming laptop it can run csgo easily above 100 fps but i think its back cover is plastic and the rest is metal

It's plastic and it uses stupidly slow eMMC storage......

My Asus Z97 motherboard uses Realtek audio and it works fine so long as Nvidia's stupid HD Audio drivers aren't installed.

and yes i use chrome, mozilla, opera, internet explorer (jk)

1. It's spelled... Xiaomi

xiaomi.PNG

2. a Core 2 duo is not that good for moderate or heavy tasks..... Browsing may be "fine" but it's not ideal.

3. 2GB RAM is JUST ENOUGH for Windows. Let alone 40+ tabs in chrome......

You should honestly be using 8GB RAM.

4. There is nothing wrong with an i7. You assume that Chinese people don't make programs or edit videos or whatever.

5. You're probably using Windows XP which a NEW laptop physically can't use.

I have to ask if it is just for online stuff why bother dropping $800 on a laptop? Keep the laptop he has a go buy a Chromebook. They are very light weight, fast and last around 8 hours.

Everything else except online stuff sucks on Chromebooks...... Chromebooks aren't what I'd consider "laptops". They'd fall more into the "netbooks" category for me.

Even still. It's an online course, in English so will require writing documents which a Chromebook excels at.

u still run into the problems i stated earlier pretty much capped at 4gb of ram on all of them and extremely slow processor speed @1.6Ghz with a 2M cache and extremely low storage only @32 Gb and she said its for a course online which means he will probably have notes and they add up to alot after a while, granted you do get 100Gb of cloud storage but only for 2 years

You do get a massive amount of online space. I have a c720 which has 2gb of ram and 16GB SSD. It has been 2 years and I have yet to see it slow down browsing the internet with a number of tabs open.

I have used it for all of my course work for HND software and Computing Science degree. 4 k word reports, design documents and even GUI/EER/Class designs using gliffy.com.

Good luck with Windows only programs. I ran a survey and based on the limited results i got, most devs only develop for Windows. Chromebooks are no exception.
